Modern NVME/SSD Recommendations - Overprovisioning and Indexing

I have been using the portable version for as long as I can remember. It does minimise to tray and you can exit from there.

When I said that, above, I was forgetting the Options menu item in the Tools menu in the program interface. That, of course, opens the Options window, with all of the ... err, options.
@hdmi got me thinking about the Everything program again, and then I remembered why if you, @bobkn, try it again and don't see the tray icon, you can turn it on in the Options window that you can get from the Tools menu. And while you're there, if you wish, you can uncheck the Run in Background option and get rid of your objection in post #29.
@hdmi is pretty good at getting me thinking. He's done it several times lately.

I tried it again, this time choosing to not let it run in the background.

The program shuts down when I close the window.

I'm curious as to what Everything actually does. I doubt that it actually searches the drives. Much too instantaneous for that. Where does it get its data?

Edit, later: I looked at the FAQ for the program. It claims to do a full search, but only for file and folder names. (Oddly enough, that is usually what I want a search to do.) It's fast, even though one of my drives is an HD.

Everything - on my system, I've turned off "Windows Search" and run Everything and the Everything Toolbar. Works great for me (over 800k files and it's fast).

OP Space on SSDs - Since I have two Samsung SSDs (970 EVO Plus and a 860 EVO), I have OP space on both (10% as per the Magician app). I see no reason to not do this. Everything I've read about the subject says that OP space is used directly by the SSD NAND Controller (if configured by Magician) and it helps to keep the drive healthy. Both of my drives are still at 100% (the 860 is almost 2yrs old now) so I won't be changing mine anytime soon. That space is small compared to the value of the drives and what they contain/do so it's worth it to me to continue.

Once the os installs and takes up every bit of space the factory OP is gone pooph.

Two apps Crucial and Samsung's shows exactly what they do after a user enables OP and people still say the opposite is true

No need to tell them, as both of them already are fully aware of this fact.

When I first started using SSDs I did the unallotted space for OP. After doing more reading up on them I have to go with the idea that the OEMs do have space set aside for OP space and manually setting up unallotted space isn't really needed. I have stopped setting up unallotted space and haven't noticed any differenced in performance.

For some specialized setups that I have that need to do a lot of temp work (constantly extracting a database to scan for values) using nvme SSDs, i have a ramdisk setup and the temp folders pointed to that, saves me a ton of unnecessary writes..

Other than a situation where im knowingly drilling the drive in a particular way, I would just get higher end quality drives and keep a backup handy, I know there are many quality drives out there, but I generally go with Samsung pro lineup where possible
