Hello, when I save-eject a USB flash drive, Windows device manager will show a yellow warning sign and in the device's info box, it will say that in order to make the device show up again, I need to remove it and reinsert it.

Let's say somebody is using remote desktop and then ejected a drive that is inserted to the PC. Let's say the person wants access to that device again, but cannot reboot the pc because that would require certain privileges. Is it possible to get access to that drive again?

You've never ejected a USB external HDD, only to think 'hang on, I just need to copy one more file from it'?

That's when it would be nice to be able to reconnect it without having to unplug then plug it back in. And like @jvickers I've never found a way to do it either.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I use a paid app called USB Safely Remove that can remount a drive that has been safely removed. It was cheap when I bought it years ago but pretty expensive now. There are a lot of free alternatives to USBSR but I don't know if any of them has the same feature since I've only used USBSR.

I also have not seen that yellow warning, usually get a message it can't be removed yet. Once removed a USB drive has to be inserted again to get it noticed. I just had a thought [dangerous, I know] but would using Task Manager and Restart Windows Explorer [has not been changed there to File Explorer yet] make the drive available without having to unplug then plug.

It's not locked to just one device, so I guess the price isn't that bad. Do you know how often the program gets updated?

Like @Winuser, I checked it out. It is reasonably priced, but if a user doesn't know to use it and eject the drive using Windows USB remove feature, you probably won't be able to reconnect the drive even if you have this program. Have you tested this out?

Hi,
Flash drives all you have to do is reconnect to a different usb port preferably a front usb port which you should have two but you can also use a back usb port they are just slower to react to new devices.

A external enclosures most of these are 12v powered and have a switch to power off/ on
After safe to remove or eject just power off and power back on you may have to reinsert it in a different front usb port but I've not had to.

Yes, if a device is ejected using the Windows feature or through USBSR, USBSR can remount it. Just double click on the drive in USBSR popup or click 'return device back'.

It replaces explorer's safely remove icon in notification area but I tested it using explorer's 'eject' and remounted through USBSR.

It's highly configurable (skins for dark mode,hotkeys, drive letter management,etc)

It updates about once a year as per here but it doesn't automatically update. USB Safely Remove all versions

I use usb drives a lot, always one or 2 plugged in, and in all the years I've used it there have been only a handful of times when USBSR couldn't release the handles keeping a drive from removing. In those cases I attributed it to problems with the drive.
