Well, I did it, and it worked perfectly. I used my PE MR rescue disk, and the new uninitialized M.2 showed up in the rescue window as a great grey blob of a drive, with no characteristics at all. But MR let me choose that one as the target for the restore operation, and from there on, it was a piece of cake. I just watched MR do its thing. I did check Advanced Settings, and I un-checked Rapid Delta, not because it was necessary, but because it was irrelevant with nothing on the target to check for "differences." Otherwise, my only role in this process was to choose the image to restore, and since I had made it five minutes earlier, just before I unplugged the PC and pulled out the OS disk, that choice was a no-brainer.

It's been running for about thirty minutes now, there were no warnings in Device Manager, all the copy speeds from internal to internal are phenomenal, and the new OS disk is running a LOT cooler than the old one. Chalk one up for WD and for Sabrent's heat sink on the Sabrent adapter card. Temps below. OS is on the left, Samsung storage drive (dormant/idle now) is on the right. the other new WD is the middle one, and I used it significantly to run copies of 18 GB files from it to the new disk and from the new disk to it.

Thank you all for your support in this operation. Each of you helped in your own unique ways, and I am indebted to you for helping me through what was for me a first-time experience. I'm glad to be here, on this great forum.

MUCH too close! The only perceivable difference is that it doesn't hurt at all when you succesfully restore an OS image to a blank disk. Falling can hurt.

An easy way and correct way is, to make MR rescue iso on target PC. hence when it runs on the target PC it has all drivers needed.

This hints, you may have multi-version of MR rescue iso (for various PCs). I just leave them on Ventoy. more specific, One PC, One MR. (ironically, that's also a reason I don't like MR )

We have said that many times but to do that you need to first install windows on new pc and then (actually) any modern
imaging tool, to create a rescue drive.

So long as you have key drivers of new pc, you can simplify the process bypassing need to install Windows on new pc. Of course, if pc comes with windows preinstalled, it is a no brainer to create a rescue drive on new pc.

I have found you normally only need one iso if it has nvme drivers and it will work on most pcs.

Okay, so now the problem is ... what to do about that hot little number from Samsung down in the corner. I'm thinking I'll try a better heatsink, since I happen to have one in the drawer, and if that doesn't work to bring them all down to the temps I like, I'll replace it with a WD SN770.

See what I mean? That thing just took about 50 Gb of transfers, and developed a fever.

Fortunately, after the marathon, it cools right down. Well, somewhat.

my seven SSD 512GB running without heatsink. none of them sees heating issues.

But I'll bet you've got fans. I'm in a SFF case with no fans (exc. CPU and PSU), so heat sinks are crucial for me with that drive. And if a WD will run cooler in that location, I'll try a WD.

HP 800, DM and SFF, CPU fan only.
DM is compact, no room for heatsink. while, SFF too spacious, no need of SSD cooling fan or heatsink.

Actually, I was just trying to say. heatsink is NOT necessary. it may be necessary only for certain cases.

I don't think you've read my thread about my hot Samsungs. If I don't use heat sinks, my temps go through the roof. Maybe it's just Lenovo SFFs, but both my Lenovo SFFs have heat problems with M.2 NVMes that they never had with ordinary SSDs or HDDs. I think I can solve the problem. I'm working on it.

Don't forget that some programs require that you unregister them from the computer first. I try my best to never have to do a clean install on my main PC because it takes me days to get all of my programs installed and the system setup the way I want it. The last time I did a clean install was on my old desktop. I could not get it to update to the latest Canary build. I even tried by using all of my Macrium images to roll back to builds that I was able to update from. It kept Green Screening and rolling back. The clean install worked but I lost all of my free software of the day programs.

It's not the falling that hurts. It's the sudden stop at the end that hurts.

Well for one idle temp is not what the issue usually is
Use a app to push the read/ write and that 35c will end up north of 60c
Settings switch it to nvm-e ssd then All.

Being curious I looked up the safe maximum operating temp for an NVMe drive and 70 degrees Celsius is listed as the max and WD saying 72 degrees Celsius. Going by those numbers your drive is running at a safe temp. Unless you really want a new drive I don't see the temp as a problem. Seeing how you already have a heatsink I would go-ahead and install it on the drive though.
