Windows XP,11 Linux Fedora Rawhide pre-release 45
Hi folks
Latest version of W11 Pro for workstations (28120.2302) running as a VM under KVM/QEMU seems fastest Windows yet -- provided you install the virtio windows drivers (this acts like Windows tools / additions on vmware workstation / player or oracle vbox) the system boots nearly instantly and runs very nicely - no probs at all so far -- running on an HP laptop with intel CORE vpro i7 CPU and using 16GB RAM of the 32GB in the laptop.

Host OS : Fedora (pre-release 45)
Kernel : Linux 7.1.0-0.rc7.260611g9716c086c8e8.50.fc45.x86_64

CPU : 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1185G7 (8) @ 4.80 GHz
graphics : GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics @ 1.35 GHz [Integrated]

No issues so far -- if W11 had started out like this - then very few complaints -- installed seamlessly as a VM !!

Runs better than my older 64GB RAM desktop type PC !!! running in Nartive mode !!. Same OS on both.

Even Windows Networking is functioning correctly !!! (apart from that minor niggle of you need to enter a remote machine name to get access to shared disks on the networked dcomputer - but you can then pin it to windows explorer so only needs to be done once.

I expect though Ms will hose this up again at the next update though !!!!!

Added -- I don't use secure boot (see no reason for that on a HOME PC !!) or bitlocker -- see no reason for that either on a home PC -- secure stuff I leave on the cloud or off line on other devices !!- plus for the VM it 's simpler to use an emulated TPM - on most linux distros this is usually installed automatically if you enable KVM / QEMU virtualisation but can be installed manually -- use your own distro package manager for that.

For the virtio-windows drivers just download the iso from the fedora site - these tools are universal for Windows VM's created under most Linux distros. Run the install FROM THE VM - of course !!!.

Cheers
jimbo

I always get curious when people post a thread and uses (Ms finally doing something decent) or (Ms finally doing something right) 😁

When i tested Fedora back in 2018 i think it was version 20+ or something.. so they are on 45 now. :-)

Curious question. When installing that win11 version. How much did you have to uninstall before you felt it wasn't to bloated?
I'm just curious as i have my thread about tweaking win2024LTSC

MS would be doing something good if they gave every user in every Country the same RTU policy. If the EU can remove EDGE then everyone should be able to. One should be able to remove AI if they want to. This all could be done by MS without breaking the OS. I have zero use for EDGE and never use it. I am sure that there are those that do. I know that there are tools available for a user to do this, but it would be better if done by Microsoft.

Yeah... i agree that everyone should be able to uninstall things.

But... they would be doing something good and something really right, if they did as with winXP/win7
When you install you get a bare-boned operating system and you manually have to install all the software you want.
So if you want AI.. then you have to install AI.. if you want Xbox games. You have to install Xbox things.

Something is really wrong when you have to spend more time uninstalling software you dont want, then the time you spend to install software you actually do want. :nope:

There seems to be an uninstall option on my version. I can't say that Xbox etc bothers me - I never use it anyway but there's plenty of ways of arranging tasks in Windows to do the things one usually wants most often.

Note though this is W11 Pro for Workstations. I'm not sure about W11 Home edition - that version always seems highly limited anyway. I think W11 Pro though the uninstall option is also there.

@Marie SWE

A computer without an OS is the equivalent to a car with no fuel. You could use an Abacus I suppose instead. Most - if not all OS'es could be better but remember whatever the device they are installed on those devices are used in loads of different ways by 100,000's or even millions of users so an OS by necessity is always going to be a compromise !!!. I suppose if you were really minded about this why not write one for yourself. A.I might even help these days !!!!!.

Nice
I try to stay away from Home editions.. if i get a OEM computer with Home, then i did use it in the past unless i had pro-keys laying around.. then i switched.
My experience is OEM installs often(not always) works best with the hardware, so i try to keep them. But that was up to win7/8.1. Now from 10 and up.. i will revaluate that principle as home seems to be a nightmare (configuration-wise)

True.. i often say that the OS is the engine of the car.. it only have one task, so you can run the software you need. no more, no less. :geek:
As for Xbox not bothering you.. i can understand that, as it dont take up GB of diskspace. :-)

If i ignore i like a clean minimized system.... from a IT-security perspective i dislike a lot of passive software that never will be used.
For every software/function you add, you get a bigger attack surface.
RDP has been the most attacked function in windows through history.. and will be again... So with pure logical 1+1=2 if you never plan on using RDP, so why have that function installed?
This is the main reason i "debloat" OS's... This goes for Linux too.. Why have SSH installed if you never-ever going to use it, its just a future potential attack surface.
So i treat all OS's the same.. If i dont need the software/function, it should not be on the system.. period. ⚠️
The exception of that rule is if it breaks the OS, so you have to leave it be. :cautious: *lol* 😅

Your use case scenario is different. That's why maybe you are having more difficulty than regular users. I bet you just got lucky this time. I never had issue with Windows 11 on any of my builds.

Linux for most people that use it seriously is usually acting as some type of file server / internet gateway / backup medium etc. It's inconceivable not to have communication with it from other systems whether VM's or real machines -- in which case things like SSH are essential. Linux can be made as minimilist as you like - even at the kernel level but it needs a load of serious work which most people don't want to do.

Some distros are really over bloated these days but there are good ones around such as Debian, Arch, and Fedora which really give users a huge control over how they generate their systems. I would tend to avoid things like Ubuntu ( I don't like Canonical anyway) and opensuse which itself is quite good but rather too specialist if you need to customise it a bit.

@badrobot

Windows does on the whole work- I agree but in the past I've had trouble with updates - especially regression where previous fixes stop working again and networking has always been for me dodgy on Windows ever since as far back as Windows 3.11 for workgroups. !!!

This current release as a VM seems to be behaving properly and working OK !! no software broken yet and hardware all working. The VM seems to run better than the native OS on an older desktop !! but that could be as Laptop has better disk (nvme type), graphics and CPU than the older desktop. The Older desktop is running W11 PRO while the laptop is running W11 Pro for workstations. Now whether there's a significant difference between these two editions I don't know but it does appear W11 for workstations has extra performance stuff for CPU's, etc on hardware that can use it.

Cheers
