Windows 11 Pro
I have finally made a decision about Win 11 after a lot of dibbing about. Our main pc and my best laptop will stay on Win 10 for the foreseeable future. I will change my best laptop when Win 11 has improved. My test laptop will stay on Win 11 as it's great on that but I will leave the insider program and use the release builds. My old pc has an old 7th Gen I7 so that will stay as is. One chap in the forum said that Win 10 was like Win 11 at this stage in development and it improved as time went by. Lets hope 11 does the same as I find too much un customizable for the way I work

Overall a smart decision, There's nothing wrong with 10 and you can use it for four more years.

My only bitch, so far, with 11 is it seems they "complicated the ham sandwich" with some customizable functions. One even requires accessing the old Control Panel.

Requiring minimum hardware is what Apple does with their OS's. I have a programmer friend with as he says "powerful high end MAC" but its not compatible with latest MAC OS.

'Final' decisions can always be revisited in light of developments, but I too have settled on a plan of campaign.

None of my laptops have anything newer than a 6th gen i7, so none qualify for the W11 upgrade.

Strangely enough the laptop I still find myself using the most often is the one I've had the longest, a 2011 machine with a Pentium B960. Far too long in the tooth for W11, and now has some hints of imminent hardware issues. Even without W11 it was time I replaced it. So I bought a modestly spec'd used laptop with the intention of cloning its W10 system to that. It's my System One below, I'll be copying the OS (complete with installed apps) to it at the end of September and will let Windows Update upgrade it to W11 on release.

The rest of my machines will stay on W10, all except one I just use for testing. That's System Two below, and that will stay on W11 for now to test whether or not an unsupported machine will continue to get updates after October 5th. If/when MS block updates for unsupported devices I'll reinstall its original W10 HDD.

A decision on migrating any of my other systems to supported hardware will be made later. With W10 supported for the next 4 years there's no rush to make a choice.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Lots of software and apps have hardware requirements and Windows is no different. The issue now is that MS has increased the requirements for Win 11. To me it was expected to happen sooner or later. MS isn't going to support older hardware forever and they're under no obligation to do so. In fact, Win10 will still be around for at least four more years giving users enough time to update their hardware.

Another logical decision. There's not one thing wrong with 10 and they will continuie to fix bugs etc

Sounds like a sound plan to me. I bought a moderate machine just for Win 11 with 8gb of ram but found I need to add another 8 and it is fast now. If the right devotement's come along I will defo be on it :)

I'm finding it increasingly harder to come to a "final" decision about Win11. I'm able to run both versions of Win11 on my desktop and a laptop after doing the "hacked installer" methods. And while I'm beginning to get accustomed to the Win11 UI, the same wallpaper can be downloaded for free.

My primary PC, a tower unit, is rapidly approaching 10 years old but I have made hardware changes to it over the years so that now, it is even using m.2 SSDs and has add-on card for USB 3.1 ports. But I've reached the end of upgrades and anything now is going to need a new motherboard, processor, and memory. If I do that and the PC really "flies" under Win10, then I can feel better about upgrading to Win 11 when it comes out.

This bothers me a lot because I have a long history of being on the leading edge of what MS has to offer. I even did some Beta testing some years ago to get pre-releases of products. But, I've gotten spoiled because I upgraded to Win8x and then to Win10 on several PCs without having to spend any real money. So while I'd like to be able to jump into using Win11 full time, I'm hesitant to spend the money just for that.

I've already read that some PCs have been kicked out of the Insiders program due to hardware incompatibility. I thought mine was going to be in the same camp, but it's running the 22548 release without any issues. So, if the current installer "hacks" continue to work after the Win11 release, and MS does not introduce checks into Win11 itself to disable "incompatible hardware" it will be harder for me to justify spending the money -- when then, it is not actually necessary.

So, I guess my position is going to be "wait and see".

I kind of think this version of Windows will make users have to make harder decisions,. Unlike in the past the requirements have changed and some will not meet them with their current rigs. I wonder how many will take the time and put in the money to getting the upgrade to use 11. I bet some PC shops will be flooded with people with requests to fix their rigs to be able to use 11.

I suspect we'll see loads of new people looking for help/advice and information starting in Oct.

If your PC or Device meets all of the requirements that were set by Microsoft, IMHO there is no reason not to upgrade to Windows 11. I love it, I am no longer using Open Shell, Windows 11 is faster than Windows 10. But at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice. (y)

I will be upgrading my main gaming machine to 11 but I have converted my work pc to Manjaro KDE. Windows could take a few ideas from KDE and still wouldn't be anywhere close.

I decided to upgrade my wife's computer:) But, seriously, it did need to get my Optiplex 9020 to replace her Optiplex 780!

I, surprisingly, found an ex-lease shop here with some 2018 Optiplex 3060's with 8th gen I5 8500 and TPM2.0 at a discounted price. How lucky, I said to myself. Couple of compliance checks later, one jumped into the checkout!

So, all good with win 11 now. I had switched to the Beta channel so will wait till October and highly likely switch back to the Dev channel. I have enjoyed the Insider route since 2014 so will end up there again I guess.

My decision won't be hard, since all of my current PCs will run Windows 11. That is, except for Little Lenovo, and I haven't used her in awhile.

Since I teach Windows 10, it remains to be seen if my students will opt in for Windows 11 or stick with 10. I'm pretty sure I'll go with the majority. Only time will tell.

Hi, Wyn. I suspect that most won't go to win 11 because of non compliance. But I might be wrong. Your students might have new comps!

We tested their computers awhile back, and all but two passed with flying colors. One of those has one of my old laptops I gave her some time ago. :( I had to apologize for that!

I bought my little Beelink Mini-PC with runs an i5-8279u specifically to run and experiment with Widows 11 on. My plan is to run Windows 11 on this hardware for 4 to 6 months and see how it performs, if I run into any problems, or really like or dislike something.

I'll most likely keep my desktop and my wife's desktop on Windows 10 for the forseeable future. if we do run into a problem where an OS rebuild might be advantageous, I'll use my experience with 11 on the Beelink to ascertain whether I would put Windows 11 on my primary desktop.

I never jump in early with an OS release. Even with my Mac, I haven't moved to Big Sur yet, and that has been out for 3 months now.

Doesn't time fly when you're enjoying yourself? 'Big Sur' (MacOS 11) was released to the public in November 2020 and the next version, 'Monteray', is now due for release "in the fall of 2021" so you might miss Big Sur altogether. It still reminds me of a prettier version of the ill-fated Windows 8 'experiment' and makes my MacBook Pro look and behave like an oversized iPad with an attached keyboard; especially as one of its main 'selling points' was that it would be able to run iOS apps (but only if users upgraded to M1 powered models). Ironic when you look back at how Apple ridiculed the design of the early MS Surface range.

If it's anything like 7 a lot longer than that :ROFLMAO: I will just wait until a lot more bugs are ironed out and it's got a lot more featues ( it's the little things people overlook)
I still use 7, and I'll continue to run 10 as well. Win 11 is only a seldom used option at this point.
