My First post - NTFS permission / ownership issue

Dear Community
Thank you for giving me opportunity to join this wonderful forum to share /gain knowledge.
Windows 11 pro of one of my friends pc has crashed after updates , He has formatted it after which some of folders from D drive have become inaccessible and files from this folder are not opening ( access denied error)
I think NTFS permissions & ownership assigned previously is changed which is causing this issue.
I tried "Take ownership Pro" but it failed. I have also tried manually to change inherittance and ownership but somehow I am not able to do it.
Is there any other way to take full control of the folder ? I am currently processing this folder from windows 10 PC. Is that reason of failure ?
Appreciate any help.

Welcome to the forum.

Firstly, you don’t need 3rd party apps. You can add these to your right click context menu.
Also, messing with permissions can be detrimental.

Perhaps the external has somehow adopted Bitlocker protection? I don’t know.

Welcome to the forum. No, using 10 does not matter when trying to change ownership. First of all I use the native "Take Ownership" method. I'm not familiar with the app you used

Things to try:

1. If the drive was bitlocked (or encrypted by any other method), you can forget it if you do not have the key.

2. Try to take ownership of the entire drive. See @hsehestedt post #2 here.

3. I don't waste a lot of time when permissions are involved. If the normal "take ownership" or cmd line method doesn't work, I always use one of the live Linux distros on a bootable usb drive to recover files, and then test and reformat the drive. Linux doesn't care about permissions. You boot from the drive, run it live rather than install, and copy files to another drive.

Hi antspants .Thank you so much for lightening fast help.
I have downloaded reg file & tried to take ownership .I am getting message as successful but actual files are still giving error "access denied"
Original locked folder is on crashed disk & files , folders cannot getting copied , however I have recovered it using pc3000.
Should I try it by on windows 11 pc.

D drive where locked folder is located is not having bitlocker encryption and is accessible.
However file icon shows yellow lock sign.

Thanks glasskuter
I have been successful to copy affected folder to another drive (none of the softwares like fastcopy / teracopy etc are able to copy files & folders)
but the issue is on inheritance and ownership which is bound with previous administrator / group.
So though on my pc I have full access controls of this folder still I am not given any rights to open /copy files.

Thank you so much LesFerch .SetACL seems to be powerful platform. I tried right-Click Tools but after completing process still all data is encrypted only. I am badly stuck up and don't know what is exact technical issue.

Guys in a twist to this case somehow I have identified actual issue with this folder that is encryption & not NTFS permissions as I assumed.
Affected folder is having EFS encryption. Unfortunately SSD on which original OS (windows 11) was present is formatted & new OS reinstalled
Due to Trim I don't think keys can be recovered now. But still I am going to give it a try.
Thanks a lot for all your help I learnt a lot of things.
