Hi folks,

I need free partitioning software that can move a partition across another partition. As in I have Win 11 on my C partition, and Linux Mint on the partition next to it. But because when I migrated everything off of one drive and to a new one, it did not fill the new drive. As in one drive was 1000 GBs and the new one was 1024 GBs, and the last 20 GBs remained unallocated because the cloning software could not move things properly to a drive that was not the exact same size. So I created a new partition out of it but it sits at the far end of my new drive, and between it and my Win 11 partition is my Linux Mint 21.1 installation.

Does anyone know of free partitioning software that can move a partition past the Linux Mint partition and then merge it into my Win 11 partition?

Thanks in advance! 😉👌

I just tried the very latest edition of GParted, burnt it to a CD, booted from it and it could not do it. It had all kinds of delays in booting from the CD, which I burnt straight to CD with ImageBurn. It did not seem to recognize my GigaByte 3600Ti, and just would not move the partition with its graphical interface. I am not up to date enough on my technical skills to use it via command line and it has been a huge disappointment. 🙄😥🤷‍♂️

I have also tried the free edition of MiniTool partitioning software and it won't do it either. It only allows for the partition to move to the partition immediately beside it. Not to the one just beyond it.

Maybe if you post a screen shot of Disk Management or Minitool, it will be easier for us to help you.

To post a screenshot on this forum...

1. Take the screenshot, edit it as desired, save to your desktop as .png or .jpg
2. Left click in your post, where you want to place the screenshot.
3. Click the Attach Files button at lower left, browse to your pic and click Insert.

I believe Minitool can do what you want.
You need to delete the 20GB partition at the far right.
Then "move" the Linux partition to the far right, keeping it the same size.
This will leave the 20GB unallocated space, next to the Windows partition.
Then you can "resize" the Windows partition to include the 20GB unallocated space.

It works. :-)

Remember... when you "move" the Linux partition to the far right... keep it the same size that it was before you started the "move". We don't want the Linux partition to "eat" the 20GB unallocated space.

When you start to "move" the Linux partition, it will say... space before = 0GB and space after = 20GB.
When you are finished moving the Linux partition, we want it to say... space before = 20GB and space after = 0GB.

When we "move" a partition 20GB to the right, we are not really... moving it.
We increase it's size by 20GB to the right, and then decrease it's size by 20GB from the left.
That way... it has moved 20GB to the right.

When you right click a partition and choose: resize/move, you will notice a handle on the left and the right side of the partition.
We use those handles to adjust the size of the partition... which in effect... moves it.

These are the "handles"...

Image1.png

Steps...

1. Delete the 20 GB partition, making it unallocated space.
2. Right click the Linux partition and choose: Move/resize
3. Grab the "handle on the right and drag it all the way to the right.
4. Then grab the "handle" on the left and drag it 20GB to the right, until it says: unallocated space before = 20GB.
5. Apply the changes and then....

6. Right click the Windows partition and choose: move/resize
7. Grab the handle on the right and drag it to the right to USE that 20GB unallocated space.
8. Apply the changes. Computer might have to reboot to perform the operation.

You can do pretty much anything with Minitool Partition Wizard. The trick is figuring out HOW to do it.
Keep in mind that whenever you do anything to the partition you're booted into (like the Windows partition)... the computer will have to reboot to apply the changes.

All hail the Minitool Partition Wizard gods. 🙏

Believe it or not, since the January update to Win 11 I cannot even make a screenshot of anything. I press the Print Screen button but it does not get saved in the Pictures>Screenshot folder. In fact, the Screenshot folder does not even exist In Pictures.

I have installed MiniTool but it will not give me the option of moving the edges of the partition. Any partition. Instead it forces me to use an interface which needs information that I don't know about. Unallocated Space Before and Partition Size and then Unallocated Space After. This is a mess.

And it shows a 505 MB NTFS partition between my Linux partition and the 20 GB I want to move into the Linux partition. I don't have a clue what is in this 505 MB partition, it may have my boot manager, so I am afraid to just delete it.

Then to the left of my Linux partition there is a 603 MB NTFS partition, between the Linux partition and my Windows 11 partition.

Then to the left of my Win 11 partition are two more partitions. One is called Other and is only 16 MBs in size with no file type info. And at the very beginning of the drive is a Fat32 100 MBs in size. Does anyone know which are safe to just delete and which are not?

As you can see, I don't know what to do with this problem. The January update did something bad to where Screenshots are saved, so I can't even provide one for you. What a dog's breakfast!!! 🙄🙄🙄

When you hit the print screen key... it saves the screenshot to the clipboard.

Open an image editor like Paint, and choose: Paste.

Quickie screenshot directions.

1. Use the PrtSc key to take a screenshot.
2. Open an image editor like "Paint", and click Paste > Paste.
3. Click on Select > Rectangular Select and drag a box around what you want to show.
4. Click on Crop.
5. Click on File > Save as > PNG picture and save it to somewhere like your desktop.
6. Now in ElevenForum, at the lower left, click on "Attach", then "browse" to the image you saved, and click "insert".

First thing I would do is unhook Disk 6 and Disk 7 and see if you can still boot into Windows (Disk 5).
If you can still boot into Windows (Disk 5)... then you can rehook Disk 6 and Disk 7 and delete everything on those Disks.
Then you can format them, and use them for storage.

You need to clean things up a bit... then worry about Disk 5.

For example... this is clean...

Disk 6 and 7 are two other NVME M.2 disks that are simply for storage. One is 1 TB in size and the other is 500 GBs in size. They don't have anything to do with this MiniTool problem.

Disk 6 is my former boot drive, but I completely formated it after I transferred the Win 11 and Linux installs to the new 1 TB Kingston 3000 using Macrium Reflect. Disk 7 is an Adata NVME M.2 500 GB drive attached to the motherboard via a PCIE adapter card. None of them are in any way a problem with what is going on.

You have TWO recovery partitions, on Disk 5.
I don't DO Recovery partitions. Maybe @zbook can help with that.
There are ways to figure out which Recovery partition can be removed.

The 505MB Recovery partition, is what's causing the problems.
If it wasn't there... the directions I gave you would work.

MiniTool does not seem capable of merging EXT4 partitions. I deleted the so-called "GPT" 505 MB recovery partition, formated both it and my leftover 20 GBs to NTFS and merged them. But it is impossible to merge an NTFS partition with my LinuxMint partition which is EXT4. And when I formated the 20 GB leftover partition to EXT4, MiniTool won't even give me the option of merging it with my Linux partition. There is always a problem here that nothing seems to fix. Admittedly, partitioning tools are not always the easiest to comprehend but I am much annoyed by these things, ha, ha, ha! 🤣😂🤔🤨

And my PC rebooted just fine without that 505 MB GPT recovery partition, so I don't think it was necessary.

Then you'll have to do as @zbook said and use GParted. :(

Unfortunately, I don't have any Linux partitions that I can test with.
But... Minitool can "see" Ext4 partitions, so it should be able to deal with them ??

Maybe @jimbo45 can help. He runs Windows and Linux, I believe.

I have GParted on the CD still, so I will try it again. It seems to be part of a Linux distro, or uses Linux as an integral part of how it boots. And it it is finicky on my machine for some reason. Maybe because it is an AMD motherboard.

There are limitations as to what you can do with partitions in Windows or any other operating system, even with third party software.

The most powerful partitioning tool (+ much more) that I've ever used is TeraByte BootIt UEFI. I've never discovered any limitations.

The terminology the program uses for moving a partition from one place to another is called "Sliding". You "slide" one partition from one place to another.

All TeraByte utilities are very powerful, but there is usually a bigger learning curve.
I'm still discovering and learning the power of them.
But they're NOT free.

The way I would do it is in stages. First is to create an image of the Windows drive.

Using MiniTool move the last partition (NTFS 505MB) to the right, 22.4GB and apply. Once done move the partition (Ext4) to the right and apply then move the NTFS (633MB) and apply. That will leave the Unallocated partition to the right of the C partition so you can expand C. Just complete the moves one at a time.
You can then expand the C drive.
