Need help to read old IDE HDD in Win11

Yo wondering if anyone have ideas or workaround method to make win11 recognize old ide hdd (run through adapter), long enough for me to extract data from 2 very old ide hdds from mid 90s to early 2000s?

I got 2 old ide hdd, they are 2.5" form factor and what was commonly called 44-pin (actually they have 43-pin) +4 jumper ide hdd, run through an ide-to-sata adapter similar to the one in picture. Assuming the adapter is in owrking order, i have read that this is not readable in win11; that's a problem for me to do this at home because i only have win11 pcs atm. i am running 22H2. Here, please read this, this guy facing same issue :-


Any help appreciated, thanks.

PS. there's another sort of adapter which converts ide-to-mini usb, think this might work better?

Note though you will need to ensure that that adapter is powered.

Not sure where you are but something like this should work. Ensure the Mains plug works for your area -- pic here is of a UK one but this type of device available on Amazon / Ebay etc all over the EU and elsewhere too.

Yep -- use 2 cables as shown in the diagram -- Use the Molex looking thing for the IDE power and the other cable for the IDE interface. All cables are supplied with the device. I'm assuming here the standard IDE type stuff -- from old Mobos which had those ribbon connectors.

If the HDD doesn't have a power connector (4 pin) then it must be horrendously old -- then I give up -- but YES --this IS an IDE interface -- here's a pic of a typical IDE HDD drive. (Not SATA) !!!

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. I have a couple of those drives somewhere. I also have about 100 IDE cables. I have no idea why I horde this old stuff.

@ants ya hehe.. so happens the one in original post also same one you suggested. one side 43-pin 4 jumper and the other end sata.
@Jim yes i see what you mean, but i think power only required for 3.5" bricks, both my ide are 2.5" laptop form factor. one of them is even older than the other, but fortunately still 43-pin ide. it's thicker than most, i got it out of my mid-90s IBM Thinkpad, the one with the really cool foldable/spring keyboard.
@Spunk & Bree Great that's actually what i needed to know, that's why i posted here in eleven.. was worried i couldnt read from the adapter. btw did u read the link i listed in original post? Got any idea why that guy couldn't?

Well, i guess i would go ahead and buy that adapter then. the one in original post. that's not my pic, it's the pic shown by the adapter merchant. thanks everyone for replies, i might come back to just update my results.

if you type "IDE adapter" on Amazon site, it will give you a lot of options to choose from.

Then what would I do with my clay pigeons?
Actually my clay pigeons don’t work. When I try throwing them up in the air to shoot at they just hit my ceiling and fall to the ground before I can leaver my Winchester 30/30

@Jim yes i see what you mean, but i think power only required for 3.5" bricks, both my ide are 2.5" laptop form factor. one of them is even older than the other, but fortunately still 43-pin ide. it's thicker than most, i got it out of my mid-90s IBM Thinkpad, the one with the really cool foldable/spring keyboard.

They all required power supplies as 44 pin is basically 40 Pin IDE + 4 Pin power supply like what is shown here:

I am using the Unitek Y-3322A and Y-3324 and it works fine with both SATA, IDE in both 2.5" and 3.5" with Windows 11 Beta Insiders..

I don't like enclosures because a lot of times, the reason why it does not work is there is a converter chip involved which might not be compatible and the cables work better.
