Need to know if there is a way to restore to a previous date

So I'm a graphics person. I was working on a new character I'm building for a program called Poser. Well this morning I went to open up Poser and I ran into all sorts of issues with it trying to find files. I killed the process and went to the Runtime folder and it's empty. So I really need to find a way to restore to a few days back if that's possible in hopes that the files are restored. If not I'm F'd. I have an older back up from before I got my new computer so all is not lost but my newer files for the new character and other bits and pieces would have to be started from scratch.

The only thing I did yesterday (the day before I worked on the character) was allow HP to remotely try to fix my scanning issues (I have a thread here about that) but that's really it. Nothing else was done to the computer. So not sure why this has happened.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Richard

Unless you have a back up image from that time or a restore point then nope

Kinda figured that would be the answer. LUCKILY I do have a back up from about a month ago but all my recent work is gone. :(

So is there a way to keep a file by file back up safe without backing up all of Windows? I have the Runtime on my D drive since it's larger and my main drive is an SSD with only one Tb so I chose another drive to keep these files safe. Guess they were not as safe as I thought they would be. This is an internal drive so not sure what the heck happened. BUT it would be nice to have a SIMPLE but effective way to back up work files like this automatically. Any suggestions?

You can set back up or save files and folders automatically to One Drive or Google drive if you use them, other than that take incremental images through programs like (dare I mention it) Macrium. **Disclaimer**Other imaging programs are available

For a file structure, I just Task Scheduler to run a set of "robocopy" commands that backs up the needed files to my NAS, and that works like a charm.

So I could have this save a copy of recent files to Dropbox or OneDrive? Is there a tutorial for using the task manager in this way? I'm not confident enough to try this with out some instruction.

Thank you!

You could try a few data recovery programs to see if your files can be found and hopefully restored.

I have tried several different programs years ago and got mixed results. Some programs couldn't find anything, and some could find my deleted files. None of them restored all of my files. Now I do backups.
I tried both Recuva and Remo Recover, those are the only two I have on board here.

I just don't understand how in the course of a day my entire Runtime for Poser 11 just went poof. I mean the entire thing like it was never there but the Poser 12 Runtime that lives next to the Poser 11 Runtime directory, all my ZBrush folders and all the other folders that live in the Public Documents area were all there and accounted for. It's really really odd to me.

As I was waking up this AM I had this same thing happen to me about a year ago. I had a huge ass back up of my zip files for the Runtimes in case anything went wrong. One day I was installing new zips to the runtimes and I wanted to organize (Because I'm a nutty Capricorn and slightly OCD) and opened up the "Installed ZIPS" folder it was EMPTY. So this is not the first time things have gone poof on me and I don't understand. No one is allowed on my computer, I have a stealth system and I run my firewall so couldn't be someone coming in and saying to themselves "I think I'll go to his D drive while his computer is OFF and delete half a terabyte of information" just not possible. So I'm totally floored by this strange behavior. The zip files went poof on my machine I just retired and this happened on my brand new machine I'm still setting up here and there. I just don't get it. I wish there were someone that had info about why this happens. I would understand if the HD was on it's way out, grinding and faltering but this is not the case. :boom:

Hi,
Kind of a case of if it can happen it usually will eventually

Paid macrium reflect has a lot of options to back up data live or hourly...
Seems you should be doing this.

There's usually sells promotions going on one of the rare utilities worth paying for if you're workload is very important
Free version is pretty good too just a tad restricted on some backup features.

:boom:
I do my backups to external drives. I rotate different drives when I do my backups. This way if one backup drive fails, I still have the other drives to restore from. This way the most I can lose is a week or two of data.

Here are a few more programs if you want to keep trying. To minimize the chance of over writing the files try using the ones that have a portable version. 21 Free Data Recovery Software Tools

So I found this one program for recovering files. Seems VERY thorough so far. It's called Wondershare Recoverit. It's been pointed to my D drive where all this mess happened and so far it's found.... well see the screen grab. I'm hopeful ..... but not expectant! LOL

Here is the site link in case anyone wants to check it out
