Sometimes we encounter issues that we can not overcome no matter how many things we try or how much time we spend. This is especially true when doing an in-place upgrade. The cold hard fact is sometimes we are left with 2 choices.
1. restoring an image made before whatever caused the issue in the first place (which may or may not work because we do not always know what point in time event causes the failure in many cases).
OR
2. Bite the bullet, do a clean install, and get on with life.

I learned it the hard way when I restored multiple images trying to upgrade from 24h2 to 25h2 but eventually had to clean install to get there. Now I will always keep that clean install image into perpetuality, just in case.

No I don't. I use the option for repair install with no luck. The servicing mechanism is pretty bad condition maybe and it didn't work. I don't have high hopes for the assistant but I will try

Assuming the ISO language matches the original installation language, you must run Setup inside Windows to upgrade or do an in-place upgrade/repair. Don't boot from the USB or you can only do a clean installation. Run Setup inside Windows. The original installation language is that of the ISO used to install Windows the first time, not any language pack added later. For example here in Greece we usually install Windows from the Greek ISO and add the US English language pack if anyone wants the English user interface. When upgrading to a newer version the language of the ISO must be Greek to keep both apps and data. Using the US English ISO won't let us keep everything. Also English is the US English version and International English is the UK English version. If you mix them won't work. Any additional languages are automatically installed again after upgrading to the newer version. Good for Windows 11! In earlier Windows versions you had to manually add the respective language packs after the upgrade.

1. You can only specify one source at a time.

2. The normal ISO would have a file named install.wim or install.esd. There are no renamed files based on a locale (el-GR or en-US). Is this an ISO created by MCT or downloaded from MS?

If you see install.esd is the compressed image version created by MCT. If you see install.wim is the standard image version included in the ISO which you download directly from Microsoft site (scroll down, third option). If you want to burn a DVD from the ISO, like we used to do with older Windows versions, you would prefer the .esd version which needs less space. For a 16GB or larger USB flash drive you can use either version.

Yes, normal iso from mct. I will test with one source only. Chat gpt gave me this command. In the wim the files are supposed to be there but they cannot be restorrs

For the newbies that read this I remind you that the ISO must be used to create a bootable USB flash drive with MCT, Rufus or similar utility. Just copying the ISO file in the USB won't work, unless the USB is specially configured with Ventoy or similar tool. Similarly for a DVD. You must burn the disc with ISOburn, Nero or similar utility, not just copy-paste the ISO file on it.

PS: Recent versions of Rufus by default create a GPT (UEFI bootable) flash drive. If you have an older computer with a Legacy BIOS, you must manually change it to MBR before creating it.

This should be enough for a Windows 11 compliant PC. For us with an unsupported computer we have to disconnect from the internet and not just run Setup. We must add the server parameter, like that to bypass compatibility check:

Setup /product server

or run Setup from a patched USB flash drive create with Rufus.

It depends. Iso should be the same exact install language and equal or larger build number. And even then, sometimes doesn't work. The setup engine should be larger than the windows build number. I faced this problem multiple times

It is important to match the version, such as 25H2, not sure if the build must be same or higher. I think you can do an in-place upgrade/install using the original 25H2 ISO, in spite of running a higher build. In worst case you will have to reinstall some updates. At least that was the case with Windows 10.

So, I managed to restore a backup with macrium, where the component store is not corrupted. I've tried to install the june cu but again the exact same behaviour, it halts at 97%. It fails to register the update from staged to completed. I think I'm doomed!

Unfortunately, repair install via windows update didn't find a source for 26200 and downloaded a source for 26100 which didn't install because it's an older version. Now I'm stucked. Windows 26200 did not installed and repair install doesn't work. Also, the june CU cannot be installed, it hangs.

Google AI says it might be because of corrupt system files. I would first run Check Disk and fix any errors:

chckdsk c: /f

This cannot be done while Windows is running, so it will suggest to do it on startup. Reply Yes and restart to do it.

Then I would repair system files with

sfc /scannow

and the dism command, I don't remember the syntax right now.

If these are not enough, I would use the ISO to do an in-place upgrade/repair and then attempt to install any more updates. Of course all of the above imply that the hard disk health is 100%. Have you checked with Crystal Disk Info or Hard Disk Sentinel?

Yes, I did that. Everything seems fine. I think I have a corruption in the AppX base. That's what I will try to solve.
