Hi folks
This could be a good idea -- depends on the reduction in price and the frequency and length of adverts.

Judging by the number of companies beginning to roll out "Ad Free" subscriptions for things it probably shows that "Classical" advertising on the Internet has problems and there are better and far less obtrusive ways of presenting adverts.

Companies need to make money to provide goods and services so adverts usually let these products be sold more cheaply - but it has to be done properly.

For example I utterly loath websites that start playing loud music when you first login to the url. I bookmark those to be blocked whatever the product they are selling.

Just wondering would people choose the ad funded service or stick to the premium ad free service. I don't have any problem with the IMDBTV service that Amazon has taken over and now called something else -- ads seem reasonably spaced and not too long so don't bother me. (I think its now called FREEVEE)

Cheers

The worst ad drive service is ITV in UK (STV even worse).

You get 3 mins of adverts every 15 minutes that you cannot fast forward through. So in 1chr program you get 4 sets of adverts. Worse if you decide to jump to last 15 mins of program, you often have to go through all sets in sequence (same ads 4 times).

Frankly ITV is practically unwatchable.

Even if you watch live TV, STV jumps to a stupid Bank of Scotland with a dreadful comedienne so you miss start of live programs. Even on a real TV, you do not get this crappy behaviour. Of course, ITV smugly say "tired of ads - give us dosh" at an exorbitant rate £4 per month.

So for any ITV program worth watching (rare), I just record it and skip through the ads on replay.

There is talk about the BBC using ads now. Of course, one can argue licence is much more expensive than ITV subscription but if BBC went ad based rather than licence fee, the quality of BBC would plummet. I guess I am biased but BBC is still recognised by most people (non UK) as the best quailty English Speaking in the world.

Unfortunately Amanda and Brandon disease will creep in and BBC will decline (happening already) and we will have lots of pretty dumbed down programd with no substance. Ads will accelerate the decline.

Hi there

ITV is pretty downmarket anyway -- the issue though is frequency and duration of these commercials -- if they are run reasonably unobtrusively there shouldn't be a huge problem but if they get greedy like ITV then that will just drive viewers away,

Beware though of some recording mechanism's which prevent people skipping over the ads. !!! That's a nasty one,

Perhaps it's time we all started watching less TV etc and did other things -- although some TV is not only excellent but can be really informative too. I absolutely hated School - especially secondary school where I'd get really bored after 2 mins having to deal with other pupils who hadn't a foggiest clue about maths or anything else. I still remember all those years ago best day of my life was the day I finally left School - and the education system here isn't nearly as bad as in a lot of other places. !!!!!

(BTW O.T -- but what's it like in Scotland watching all the mayhem and schenanigens going on with essentially an English Tory party -- some of it looking at it from here would make a great Stand Up comedy spectacle at this years Edinburgh Fringe).

Cheers
