Good morning. Can anyone explain to me why my desktop PC and my laptop have significantly different test results? Both are connected to the ethernet and both are running the same program. The PC results show downloads of over 700 mbps and uploads of over 600, while the laptop shows downloads of 50 and uploads for 200+. Is it possibly due to the hardware in the laptop, or is this just the way laptops work? Just curious.

How old is the laptop? I had one that topped ethernet port at 100mbs so I got a gig usb adapter tp bring up to 1gb. When i got a new laptop with no ethernet port, I transferred it to new laptop.

Try disconnecting the Ethernet cable from your desktop system and use it for the laptop. Repeat your tests. If the speed improves then you know that it must be the cabling or switch or something on the infrastructure side that's causing the problem. On the other hand, if it remains slow then you can eliminate all of that and just focus on the laptop itself, for example on the drivers, network configuration etc.

Also check the power plans. Desktops can be set to max power, and laptops can be balanced or power saving. Sending/receiving data is a power consuming action, so it might be not optimized for raw throughput.

If your laptop doesn’t have a dedicated Ethernet port and you’re having to use a USB Ethernet adapter, make sure it’s a good one as they are a main contributor to slower speeds. I can confirm as I have faced this on quite a few occasions.
