New install on spare laptop

Nope - it happened again during restart and installing windows updates - blue screen code was driver power state failure. So I think it’s an update causing it. Within Windows updates are various intel and hp updates as well as windows ones - when installing 10 or 11.

It recovers from it but then sfc scannow shows corrupted files and repairs them. I guess that’s the best I’m going to get for an initial image after the install.

So don’t think there’s anything wrong with this laptop but an update of some kind is causing issues.

At least the screen is staying on and no flashes or black screens so I’ll leave it on Win 10.

It was actually running perfectly fine on Windows 11 on the old drive which was a 500gb Optane drive. From a factory install.

Send 'em to me, I'll pay the postage! Would love a project! I'm very pleased with my Acer Swift bought from Currys for £349. And one for my wife from John Lewis at the same price. They only have 4GB RAM so I would but a higher spec today. They were bought in 2021. Proves you don't need to spend a lot.

If I come into any money, I would buy from these guys - a modular laptop!

I did a clean install of Windows 10 on an HP Pavilion 23-p027c (all-in-one); Corei5-Gen 4. Installed a Samsung 960EVO-500GB SATA in place of the 1TB HDD drive, no issues. Later did an in place upgrade to Windows 11, no issues. It's as speedy as any of my newer Lenovo laptops. I did use the HP Support Assistant but it found nothing, likely because it's a 10 year old computer.

Funnily enough I'd been looking at framework laptops.

There's nothing wrong with this one (but there is with the other one!). And both can be taken apart and the ram and ssd upgraded or changed. It's a software issue I think and I vaguely remember some HP firmware that came through Windows updates causing problems in the past.

It installs fine up to the point it tries to install a load of updates at restart. It's working ok now but some updates have failed and Windows update giving an error code so I'll look into that later.

It's KB5001716 which I think is a known issue. Just wondering if some later update means it becomes redundant? I'm up to installing the feature pack for 22H2 - is it likely that will make kb5001715 redundant?

That worked. It's gone away after the feature update. Might as well let it install Windows 11 over the top now.

Ok so it's all running fine and Windows is mostly updated (apart from this month's weird one that fails due to recovery partition size or whatever). That's on Windows 10. Except I ran sfc/scannow again and it has found more corrupt files and fixed them. This shouldn't be happening on a new install and a new ssd drive. Could it be the failed windows updates causing the issues?

It's on Windows 11 now. I used Windows 11 installation assistant to upgrade it. That got rid of the Windows 10 update that wouldn't install. All seemed to go fine and it seems stable still. Except I have the odd app twice in the menu. So fingers crossed all sorted now. Up to date graphics driver installed before the upgrade. Maybe I dare put all my files on now.

Apologies that was all Windows 10 :-) It's on Windows 11 now.

Not bothering to even install HP Support Assistant just yet as it's way behind with it's updates. The last bios update it pushed out wasn't the latest one.

Have to say Windows 11 looks much nicer on my 14” screen than it did on my 13” one. Maybe because I can see better 😂

The faulty identical laptop has finally died - last blue screen message was “Memory management “. After that just a black screen when I turn it in so I guess it was the memory that failed. A new keyboard and ram for it isn’t really worth it so I’m keeping it for spares for the current identical laptop and have the ssd in an enclosure and will use that for backups.

Occam's razor suggests that files being in Pictures instead of Ducuments and vice versa is probably human error as it seems there's no other way this could happen. 😉😊

If the 2 are identical, have you thought about instead of taking out the screen, swapping entire lid with screen and hinges in it.

Lol. I wish it was that. They files and folders were all in the correct place on the storage drive but when copied across they were literally all muddled up. The external drive and files are corrupted. Annoying as it was a quite new 5tb external drive - and also had my system images on! A reminder not to leave external drives plugged into a computer during a storm and power cuts. I do actually have a surge protector on the plug as well but it's quite old - maybe needs replacing. Made new images on two different external drives now. I really need to look into cloud backups ...........

In the end I put the ssd from the defunct laptop into an external case and copied the files across from that. They were all fine.

Thanks! I would have done that but turns out there is nothing wrong with the screen :-) It was software/driver glitches. But yes I do have a spare screen now :-)

Ok so the original computer is definitely defunct. Installed different ram and a different ssd and installed windows 11 and it seemed ok at first but then started crashing and blue screening again and black screen on start up. So definitely think the Motherboard was damaged. So it's in the "spare parts" box. It all happened during a storm and a power cut  Shouldn't have left it plugged in during a storm. Although may have been coincidence.

The "spare" identical one I set up is doing nicely and has all files on now and has been backed up. So still have one working laptop and a spare screen.
