Ahh memories, paper tape punch, 8" floppy, teletype rattling away, coding a 16 bit minicomputer using the keys on the front panel!

16 bits? Luxury!

Some of us started with 12 bit minicomputers and learned to think in Octal rather than Hex. I used to key in the startup code that read the bootstrap loader from paper tape on one of these at Uni.

It wasn't until much later at work that I graduated to 16-bits (still had to key in a bootstrap loader though). :ROFLMAO:

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Do not forget the most important piece of literature from that era....

Back in the good old days -- the "Golden Era" of computers, it was easy to separate the men from the boys (sometimes called "Real Men"and "Quiche Eaters" in the literature). During this period, the RealMen were the ones that understood computer programming, and the QuicheEaters were the ones that didn't. A real computer programmer said things like "DO 10 I=1,10" and "ABEND" (they actually talked in capital letters, you understand), and the rest of the world said things like "computers are too complicated for me" and "I can't relate to computers -- they're so impersonal". (A previous work [1] points out that Real Men don't"relate" to anything, and aren't afraid of being impersonal.)

Further back in the good old days... when ships were wood and men were iron...

I give you the... Slide Rule. The good ones were rosewood and brass.
They were impervious to viruses, and didn't need electricity to operate.

I could beat a calculator with one of these bad boys.
Although, the calculator could easily show solutions with more decimal places. :D

They could: add, subtract, multiply, divide, do squares and cubes, and their roots, and could even do logs and basic trig functions.

Adding and subtracting on slide rules was possible, but it was easier to do that on paper. 8-)

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Another happy Octogenarian here!
The first computer I ever worked on, (circa, 1964) filled the first two floors of a five story office building, and it heated the whole building.
It had thousands of little Vacuum Tubes and consumed thousands of pounds of paper every month.
"PC" wasn't even a name yet. I built my first PC out of spare parts in ~1980, and that propelled me into the Personal Computer Business.
I had already been in the Commodore 64 business for a while. I modified the OS on the C-64 to make it faster and more efficient.

Making a computer BETTER has always been my goal, and still is. Even while running Windows 11, Optimum 24H2, V4.2, the fastest Windows I've ever run, I still tweak and tune for maximum speed and efficiency. And, I work hard to keep my 12 yr old PC as clean, lean and mean, as possible. For years it was my occupation, and now it's just my Hobby.

And just recently, I got Star Link as my new Internet supplier, and it's twice as fast as the old Hughes.Net that I used to have.
Where I live, Satellite Internet is the best I can get.

Cheers mate!
TM

Further back in the good old days... when ships were wood and men were iron...

I give you the... Slide Rule. The good ones were rosewood and brass.
They were impervious to viruses, and didn't need electricity to operate.

I could beat a calculator with one of these bad boys.
Although, the calculator could easily show solutions with more decimal places. :D

They could: add, subtract, multiply, divide, do squares and cubes, and their roots, and could even do logs and basic trig functions.

Adding and subtracting on slide rules was possible, but it was easier to do that on paper.
There is a significant time delay when using a slide is working out where the decimal point goes!

I never did use a Slide Rule, but....
I did work for NCR when they released the first Electronic Calculator. It was the size of a typewriter, and had Nixie Tubes for the Readout. It did not print out answers. It was your most basic Electronic Adding Machine. OH, how far we've come!

I remember as a kid my dad took me up to London to visit the museums in the afternoon. For the morning he had to go into the office. While he was working he let me amuse myself playing with a electrically powered mechanical calculator.

I managed to crash it (apparently dividing by zero was a bad idea). Seems that the old trick of 'turn it off and on again' pre-dates the PC :ROFLMAO:

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop.

Not really, once you get used to it. We grew up knowing where the decimal point... went.
But extrapolating out to two or three decimal places, that required good eyes. :-)

The first portable calculator didn't come out till 1972 and was too big for a pocket.

Was made by Texas Instruments, and could only add, subtract, multiply and divide.

The first scientific calculator, came out in 1974... and you could get a belt holder with it.

Welcome from another old guy! 72 in a couple of months. First computer was an Atari 400 back in 1983, when Sam Tramiel thought that 8k of memory would be enough...
