New Outlook for Windows available to all Office Insiders

  • Staff
Hi, Office Insiders! My name is Margie Clinton, and I’m a Group Product Manager on the Outlook team. I’m excited to announce that the new Outlook for Windows will begin rolling out for all Office Insiders to try starting today!

Explore the new Outlook for Windows

This past May, we expanded our work of creating a more consistent Outlook experience across endpoints (including Windows) with the release of our early preview of the new Outlook for Windows. This new Outlook for Windows is designed to provide a contemporary yet familiar Outlook experience that helps to improve personal productivity and email organization for users.

Since then, we’ve received valuable feedback from Office Insiders on Beta Channel about how to create a more consistent, feature-rich experience. We’ve taken this feedback into account and incorporated updates into this most recent rollout.

Beginning today, members of our Office Insiders community on Current Channel (Preview) will begin to have access and be able to explore new Outlook for Windows as we roll it out to the community. In the coming weeks, this experience will also be made available for Windows Insiders using a similar toggle within the Windows Mail app.

How it works

If you are signed up as an Office Insider and running Beta Channel or Current Channel (Preview) builds, all you need to do is slide the Try the New Outlook toggle located in the upper-right corner of your classic Outlook for Windows, and follow the onscreen instructions.

NOTE: You can switch back to your previous Outlook experience whenever you want. Just switch the toggle off and it will automatically open your previous version with no data or email loss.

What’s new in Outlook for Windows?

We’ve been listening to feedback since May and our team has been working diligently to improve the new Outlook for Windows. We’re excited to share that, in addition to numerous performance improvements, the following updates have been made:

The ability to support Microsoft accounts

Now you can add your personal Outlook.com, Hotmail, or Windows Live email accounts to this new Outlook for Windows.

Add your other Microsoft email accounts

Quick Steps

Now you can save time with the Quick Steps feature, which shows personalized triage actions that you can use repeatedly to keep your inbox clean and organized, and newsletters or important files in easy reach.

Dynamic calendar column widths

Now you can adjust the width of columns in your calendar, letting you customize how much space to give each day as you view the details of your weekly schedule.

Change the width of the columns in your calendar view.

Simplified Ribbon options

Now you see new pared-down Ribbon options give a sleeker look and feel that is easier to navigate as you email.

The simplified ribbon is sleeker and easier to navigate.

Tips in Outlook

Now you can take advantage of tips that let you know about new, useful features as they roll out so you can take advantage of them right away. You can also see Tips in the calendar board view, giving you everything you need to plan your schedule in one place.

The Tips pane (seen in the calendar board view) offers helpful suggestions about new features available to you

Updates already available

The new features above build upon what we already made available in the early preview version in May (read more about it here) including:
  • Microsoft Loop to keep your team synced across Microsoft 365 apps
  • Using @ mention to find and attach documents
  • Intelligent assistance automatic reminders
  • Drag and drop emails to your To Do with My Day
  • The new Outlook calendar board view
  • Pinning important emails
  • Sweep to keep your Outlook inbox tidy
  • Shared mailboxes and folders for easy collaboration

What’s next?

Features that we plan to release to our Insider community—both enterprise and consumer customers—in the upcoming months include:
  • Support for multiple email accounts within the same app. In the future you will be able to access multiple email inboxes and calendars (including both work and personal) in the same Outlook experience, just as you can today in Outlook mobile.
  • Support for third-party email accounts in Outlook for Windows, including Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, and more.
  • Numerous visual updates and personalization options so you can create your preferred email experience.
  • Offline support so you can get things done and access content even when not connected to the Internet.
  • Search folders for quick and easy access to all your emails.
  • Support for web add-ins to enrich emails and calendar events with third-party apps and services like Salesforce and Zoom.
  • Native ICS file type support designed to help you easily view and manage calendar events so you never miss an important event.
If you’re a member of the Windows Insiders community, in the coming weeks you will begin to gain access to the new Outlook for Windows via a toggle—similar to what you see above—in the Mail and Calendar apps in Windows.

Requirements

  • Minimum OS version Windows 10 Version 1809 (Build 17763)
  • A Microsoft work or school account, or a personal Microsoft account (at this time)
  • Internet connection (at this time)

Availability

These features are rolling out to Office Insiders running Beta Channel or Current Channel (Preview) Version 2209 (Build 15629.20058) or later of Outlook for Windows.

Don’t have it yet? It’s probably us, not you.

Features are released over some time to ensure things are working smoothly. We highlight features that you may not have because they’re slowly releasing to larger numbers of Insiders. Sometimes we remove elements to further improve them based on your feedback. Though this is rare, we also reserve the option to pull a feature entirely out of the product, even if you, as an Insider, have had the opportunity to try it.

Known Issues

Since the new Outlook for Windows is still in preview, it is likely that there might be some gaps.

Why am I not seeing the preview toggle?
  • If you are using a consumer account, the rollout to Beta Channel or Current Channel (Preview) might take some time.
  • Your organization has not added you to Beta Channel or Current Channel (Preview). You can ask your IT administrator if they can add you.
  • If you are unable to connect a Microsoft 365 work or school account to the new Outlook, contact your IT administrator.

Feedback

We look forward to continuing to build Outlook for Windows using the valuable input we receive from you.

If you have any feedback or additional suggestions for improvements, please click Help > Feedback to let us know.

Learn what other information you should include in your feedback to ensure it’s actionable and reaches the right people. We’re excited to hear from you!

I used the New Outlook for a while. While I appreciated the Sweep option to regularly clean my Inbox, I didn't like that I couldn't manually force it to clean whenever I wanted it to. Additionally, the inability to open alternate emails, like my work-related mail for IT stuff, proved too much, and I had to revert to the old format. I hope that the old does not go away any time soon, as rules to filter messages upon receipt is also preferable to me than the sweep action, which still dumps everything in your Inbox and then cleans it up later.

Also, search folders, which I use to see all unread form all folders, a must have for my workflow. It's really premature, IMO, to release this live right now. If you're used to using the online format at outlok.,com it will be a lot easier to transition the installed application from the Office Suite to the new version. However, even just one of those items that have yet to be implemented can easily break a standard workflow for anyone using this for corporate accounts.

The SR (Simplified Ribbon) is great in this version (I am not an Insider, but I saw some SS). I love it :loveit:. Why don't they bring this damn SR to the whole Office apps? About 4 years have passed since its introduction.

I do agree, that simplified ribbon was fantastic. But hte lack of RUles and only inclusion of Sweep function was a deal breaker for me.

Odd I am on the Beta Insider build and have never been offered this version, which seems like a good thing. I prefer my native win32 apps. These web based apps are just far too slow and clunky

I saw it immediately after changing over to Office Insider and selecting the Beta channel.

If you are signed up as an Office Insider and running Beta Channel or Current Channel (Preview) builds, all you need to do is slide the Try the New Outlook toggle located in the upper-right corner of your classic Outlook for Windows, and follow the onscreen instructions.

When I did that it did some stuff, which basically ended up being that it downloaded a new app to my user directory that I could run and use the new interface. It never actually changed the default Outlook when on the Betas, so you could run either one at any given time (and both SxS if you wanted to take a chance on confusing it with 2 programs accessing the same data lol).

270.png

I actually did a comparison of the context menus between the old default Outlook program and the Outlook online interface (for a totally different post), but the comparison between the old and new interface is pretty comparable to that post.

Hi folks
Not sure any of this extra stuff is of any use to me. All I want from email is for it to be as simple as possible, multiple accounts, Imap, send and receive with attachments and a junk / spam mail option. I don't need all these zillions of calendars etc -- if I can't remember an appointment then it's not important enough for me to bother with it anyway, and for really important stuff a reminder on a mobile phone works far better in my case.

Sometimes simplicity is best -- like the old Outlook Express in XP. I don't need more than that and I'm sure I'm not alone.

A decent simple email program handling the above requirements and is very fast and FREE -- if you can run a Linx VM is claws email.

I only use OUTLOOK these days because I have other programs in the Office suite, POWERPOINT, EXCEL, and PROJECT are the 3 that still are so far ahead of anything else which is the main reason I still use Office 2021.

Others might like to have calendars, loads of zoom / teams meetings, things to do and all sorts of other 97 zillion appointments -- I'm way beyond that sort of phase these days.

Reminds me of those old "Yuppie pics" of young expensive suited "consultants" carrying around thick filofaxes the size of the original Gutenburg Bible.

cheers
jimbo

@Edwin,

No. That is to enable the option to actually try the new version. As noted, it is a physically separate build of Outlook.exe, and you can run them side by side (if you want to take a chance, if both versions are accessing the same data).

As for full ribbon - uh, it most certainly does. It also has the option to use a simplified ribbon.

I'm not getting this option on the Beta Channel..., is it only for 365 users?

You have the Beta channel for Office and are not a 365 subscriber?

And according to Join Windows:

Perpetual licenses

To join the Office Insider program, you must have a subscription version of Office. A subscription to Office delivers the latest features on an ongoing basis.

If you see 2016, 2019, 2021, or LTSC in the license name, this indicates a perpetual (non-subscription) version of Office. A perpetual license includes features that have been tested and shipped at a point in time; it doesn’t change until the next perpetual version of Office is released. Because this version of Office does not get feature updates, you won’t see the option to join the Office Insider program.

Note: Both the subscription and perpetual versions of Office receive regular security updates.

So, they say you're not supposed to see that option to join the Office Beta program, and yet you're a part of it.

Weird. Maybe the Office install glitched and showed you as joining the Beta Program and yet you're not actually a part because of the license of the installed version?

Thanks  . I think they are getting closer to the macOS UI. Not just stripping to show their curves (like women) but practical (better use of the spaces). IMO They did a great job (but only for Outlook). I will switch to the new Outlook whenever they implement SR to all Office apps. I hope they implement it in the LTSC version, too (I have O365, but I am using my sister's LTSC version because I hate the new Fresh UI with its chubby buttons!).

Is Outlook Today no longer available with this new Outlook?

Also, the links to my other Office apps on the left only link to Office Online. Why don't they link to my installed Office apps?

So, I was finally offered the chance to switch on the new Outlook for desktop. Overall, it looks pretty good. I suppose if you're used to Outlook on the web, this program/app will be fine to use. But if like me, you're used to the full Outlook application, this new experience is a step back. Lots of stuff and config options missing. A lot less control over the user interface.

Also, with my taskbar set to auto-hide. The new Outlook will not show the taskbar when hovering over it, maximized Outlook will not show the
taskbar... Alt tabbing away and back, shows keyboard shortcuts in the app (H, V and ZR at the right). E-mails are opened with a single click, no double-click required, not so great from a security point of view. Calendar pane lacking, no week numbers. Really not ready yet, switching back to the old Outlook.
