New Windows 11 media player not playing m2ts video

I've searched for a solution, but get responses telling me to install VLC, and a host of other players.
I would much prefer to stick to the built-in Windows 11 apps.
Tried refreshing, resetting, uninstall/reinstall.
With the exception of HEVC files, which I understand the codec has to be purchased, all other types play with no problem.

Movies and TV plays the file fine, so what's wrong with Media player, which is, after all, a "media player"?

m2ts should be supported, assuming this article covers your version of WMP as well: File types supported by Windows Media Player Perhaps installing a different codec pack might help.

According to the link you provided, m2ts is supported. I just get a blank screen when I attempt to play them.

I just tried the classic media player, which I was amazed to find is still in Windows 11.
File played fine.

It also plays in the Films & TV app.

Many media players use a generic description of what file types (solely by file name extension) they can/will play, without regard to the other aspects associated with the "substance" of a video file.

A video file is simply a container for 2 components - an audio stream and a video stream. And the type of audio stream and the type of video stream can vary between different file types, and also within the same file types. Simply stating that a player will play one file type ignores the possibility of a non-standard audio/video stream. Such content streams can result in a video player with no audio, video or both.

If you want to see what streams a video file has, MediaInfo (freeware) is a good analyser.

Codec packs might be all well and good for one given situation, but frequently create other problems. Many are also full of undesirable-ware add-ons, in some case not known to the installer/user.

WMP is probably one of the most basic players available, it doesn't take much out of the ordinary to upset it. Better options (both freeware) are Daum PotPlayer and VLC. Using both over a long, long time I've never had to resort to a nefarious codec pack for any video.
