Non-cloud based backup software

I have searched in Windows for a backup program, but the only one appears to be the cloud-based OneDrive backup. Are there any alternatives that allow backup to an external drive, such as a USB drive? I have been manually plugging in the USB drive every so often to save my important files in case something happens to my PC. Is there a better way, or is this the best method? Ultimately, a complete image of my PC would be ideal. Or a software that automatically updates to a secondary hard drive connected permanently on a timed cadence (If I were to buy a storage drive - which is how I'm leaning.)

Windows 11 offers multiple backup options, including OneDrive sync, the dedicated "Windows Backup" app for settings/files, and traditional "System Image" backups in Control Panel. For complete protection, use an external drive to create a full system image, while OneDrive offers real-time file

The best backup method is disk imaging with software such as Macrium Reflect or Acronis True Image. There are also excellent free options. And yes, they allow you to save the image to physical media.

Use third party backup solutions. There are lots of them.

MS told us not to use their Backup utility to make systems images about 8 years ago.

We have used Macrium Reflect for many years and have never been disappointed. I can't even count how many times it's saved the day.

...but remember, the FREE Hasleo Backup Suite only runs on non-commercial OSes... ie, Home, Pro, Pro Workstation, etc. It will not run on large scale licensing arrangements, ie, Enterprise or Education, be advised.

The Hasleo PRO license will run on all versions of Windows but does have a license fee.

Yeah there is a better way. Windows has a backup feature that you can use. it is free and extremely effective. free tools are there but not really required unless you have a specific requirement that is not met by the Backup and Restore Feature.

Search for ‘control panel’
Select ‘Backup and Restore (Windows 7)’
Choose ‘Create a system image’
Select an external hard drive as the destination
Best of luck using that old limited functionality deprecated software.

Don't, as explained in post #4.
MS told us not to use their Backup utility to make systems images about 8 years ago.
It had been seen to be unreliable well before MS's warning - it would happily make system images but would often fail to recognise them if the time came to restore one of them.

Better, maybe, more reliable, no. Nothing beats copy/paste, an automatic backup software can glitch and all backups will be doomed.
I have sync, cloud backup, system imaging, but when it comes to a backup, I can always rely on a good old USB. It has not failed me yet.

Nothing beats copy
I agree.
I make system images of my Windows drive [I use Acronis True Image - some others are described in links within post #4].
I use a RoboCopy script to backup my own files in their original file formats [Excel, Word, Access, PDF, mp3, ts, ...]. Those files can then be restored by any method I choose, such as simple copying.
Here's a specimen RoboCopy backup script.
RoboCopy -DST -FFT -NDL switches - my post #17 - TenForums
- It is the template I use for all new backup requirements.
- My main backups are made, alternately, on two separate external HDDs as are my system images. They could equally well be USBs of sufficient capacity. Each one is used [and hence tested] every fortnight so I have great confidence that at least one of them will still work in the unexpected event of my computer failing.
- I also make hourly automatic RoboCopy file backups of my most important files onto a MicroSD card that lives in an adapter in my otherwise unused SD card slot. It is a convenient protection against computer failure & accidental amendments even though it would be as at risk from malware attack as my computer itself. In an emergency I can read the backed up files on my phone.

Boy that's a blast from the past. I know it's still there in the OS but I definitely would not rely on it.

It is ABSOLUTELY NOT the better way, and is strongly UNrecommended, even by Micrososft itself !!
