Setting up a slightly older HP Officejet Pro 8610 as Wireless encountered an issue. The client had a new modem/router installed and it gave both the standard wireless [2G] and the 5G wireless. It turned out I had to change the Notebook connection from 5G to the standard then the printer could be found on Wi-Fi, wouldn't see the 5G connection. Sometimes technology outpaces us.

Could be some setting on the router. Separate nets?

No, it was just changing the Notebook from ISP's setting of 5G connection to the 2G, the printer couldn't be seen or work with 5G.

Of course, you do not really mean 5G and 2G - they are mobile phone bands.

You mean 5 GHZ and older 2.4 GHZ wifi frequency bands,

Majority of peripherals only support 2.4 GHZ, even my new laserjet.

I guess the manufacturers are too tight to make them dual band.

The printer should be connected to the 2.4 GHz router network, as it connects directly to the router, not to the conputer. The computer can be connected to the 5 GHz router network.

In this case the computer had to also be connected to the standard or 2, couldn't see the printer if connected to the 5.

That is just naming, and differa for different ISPs.

On my router it justs adds a -5 to name for the 5Ghz, and nothing for 2.4Ghz.

What is a PITA is some routers now do not differentiate between the bands as separate SSIDs and "intelligently" decide which to use, and of course, it often chooses the one you do not want LOL. This is from BT in UK, one of primary service providers

I have had to revert to an older router as the new router would not let ME decide!

Anyway, just ditched BT as they wanted £45 per month for renewal and all others are offering around £22 per month for same speeds.

When I signed up 2 years ago, BT were the only fibre service (actually not full fibre - still cable from local box to house).

However all the others have fibre now, and are much cheaper.

When I cancelled, they offered a pathetic reduction of £3, talking about all the benefits, none of which I use anyway.

Ok, I lose the guaranteed service where they supply a modem that connects to mobile networks, but I am not prepared to pay £23 a month for that.

I can tether to my mobile phone anyway, even if I need to pay for a short term unlimited data addon.

That definitely sounds like a router configuration issue than anything. If what you say is true then my desktop would never be able to connect to my printer which is connected to my (as in my own and not the ISP's network appliance) router wirelessly and my desktop is connected by ethernet (zero wifi capability.

Then again I personally refuse to use an ISP provided appliance as anything other than a modem in bridge mode with my own router behind it. If nothing else it keeps you in control of your home network and not your ISP, which can bring it down in a heartbeat with a firmware update.
