Nuking OneDrive...

OK... recent Windows update and somehow Onedrive got turned on and was sending all my Documents, Desktop and Pictures files to it's servers. It took me all this evening working with CoPilot to methodically return all files to my PC, verify them then disable and then uninstall the app.

I then asked it how to make sure this never happens again. It said to use GPedit to 'nuke' it: Administrative Templates/Windows Components/OneDrive. "Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage", set it to enabled. I was successfull working with CoPilot to return all my files, verify them, disable it and uninstall it: is this really the way to nuke it so even updates won't install it again, turn it on and I find all my files are disappearing again?

I had already uninstalled OneDrive.

Thanks about the tip for disabling automatic updates to MS Store Apps. I'm not sure I want to though since there may be some of them I use and don't want the potential for them to stop working correctly. But I would love that it be less 'secret' about it: like tell me there's an update and I should let it run. Similar to how Windows Update works at least. Too bad Microsoft doesn't seem to care much what their customers want.

You can always update any app... manually.
Just go to MS Store and find whatever app and check the version number.

If it's newer than the one you have, install it.

The only MS app I've had to update since Oct 2021, was TranslucentTB

TranslucentTB makes your Taskbar... clear.

OneDrive is actually quite useful for sharing selected files between PCs. Its easy enough to configure Onedrive to specify what is pemitted to be stored in the Cloud.

Yeah... but I don't like how it seems to do things without asking me. I had it turned off and uninstalled but after receiving an update package it re-installed and turned back on. What was worse is it actually moved the files for three folders to cloud storage, all without asking me which folders/files I'd want this done for.

And since restoring from such a backup requires net access, something I may not have, I prefer using a local backup instead.

There was a screen a couple days after the Update to 'Let's Finish Setting Up Windows', which I'm always careful to skip or decline to allow the 'Let's Backup Your Files'. It ignored my response and did it anyway, or made it so confusing I clicked the wrong box. MS loves to use double negative responses similar to "decline to not allow backup of your files"; click a response without thinking through the logic twist and you're dead. Something like that may have got me. So when I saw the GPEdit policy that over-rides everything else to NEVER allow OneDrive I jumped on it.

its worth a look at if you require to remove OneDrive.
