hi,
i'm trying to work something out, on my current install of windows 11 (24h2), though i have it to sign-in automatically (no password) local account.
if i click sign-out it automatically signs back in.
where on another machine sign-out stays on the sign-in screen ready to sign-in again. (signs in automatically on a restart or cold boot.)
i guess i've changed something in the registry but i've compared the winlogon key in the registry with a virtual machine and the other physical machine and all the settings are the same.

any ideas? hope that makes sense. i'm not talking about normal auto logon which is already set on both machines and virtual machine.

to make it easier to understand.

I click sign-out, and windows signs out and then instantly signs in again.

it does not do this on another machine or on a virtual machine. windows stays signed out until i either reboot and click sign in.

i've also done a bit of searching for windows signs out and then back in but only come up with users reporting signing in and then windows signs outs, a completely different issue.

found the issue @ Cannot Log Off Current User in Windows - Microsoft Support

sounds like what i'm experiencing but the solutions did not work. i even created a second local profile and tried again signing out from my main one but it just did the same thing and signed back in. switch user works. but sign out doesn't.
not sure why it isn't happening on my other machine. though, it is using an older build of windows 11...maybe that's why.

Do you have a ForceAutoLogon value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon?

It's been a very long time, but didn't you used to be able to configure an account with a password to autologin?

Google AI says this...

To enable automatic login in Windows 11 with a password-protected account, you'll need to adjust the system settings using the netplwiz command and the Registry Editor. This process allows you to log in automatically without needing to manually enter your credentials each time.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. 1. Open the User Accounts Dialog:
Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type netplwiz, and press Enter or click OK.
  • 2. Disable Password Requirement:
In the User Accounts dialog, navigate to the "Users" tab. Uncheck the box next to "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".

  • 3. Set Account Details:
Click "Apply" and then enter your username and password for the account you want to set up for automatic login. Confirm the password and click "OK".

  • 4. Enable Auto-Login (Registry Editor):
Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\PasswordLess\Device.

  • 5. Adjust DevicePasswordLessBuildVersion:
Double-click the "DevicePasswordLessBuildVersion" DWORD. Change the value from 2 to 0 and click "OK".

  • 6. Restart your PC:
After making these changes, restart your computer. You should now be able to log in automatically.

number 5 from what i read is for automatic login for a microsoft account logon.
already tried it on 0. still does auto logon when logging off.

no ForceAutoLogon in winlogon key. i added it to the virtual machine registry and it performed the same auto sign-in that my main pc does without the the setting in the registry. and when set to 0 it stopped signing back in when signing out.

when i added it to my main pc a value of 0 didn't do anything, it's like it's being ignored.

i believe you are right and i think i've cracked it. i exported all my applied group polices from my real install to my virtual machine, rebooted and then tried signing out and it instantly signed back in.

so now i've just got to go through the policies and find out which one causes this auto signin.

i tested it multiple times on a virtual machine and it kept signing back in on logoff.

and i restarted, test in both enhanced mode and not enhanced mode. but when i removed or set that policy to 0, there was no more issue.
i've had this issue for several months but only just thought about getting to the bottom of it. i just assumed my install was f'd and i needed to clean install
but i couldn't be bothered as everything else is fine and it was only a minor issue that i just thought was odd.
