Which version of Office 2010 do you have?

Back in 2012 I was taking some college classes so I bough University Office for $99. It was identical to Office 2010 Professional which then sold for about $400. One nice thing about it was I could install it on two computers assuming the 2nd was a laptop. I wish I could do that with newer versions of Office.

I have no intentions of buying a newer perpetual license for Office as long as the current ones still work. It does not matter that they no longer get updates.

Back in late 2022 after I got a new laptop I bought Office 2021 Pro Plus for it from an online seller. For some reason early this year it would no longer stay activated.

I bought a new license for my laptop from Stack Social. So for it is working OK. I chose Stack Social because I bought a license for Office 2021 Pro Plus for my desktop in 2024.

BTW, I have 2 copies of Office 2019 Pro Plus and 1 of Office 2010 Pro on other computers. They are all still working OK.

I actually ordered two licenses from a seller via Groupon about an hour apart and they were sent with the same licence key. In a lot of instances it is a multi user license key that some companies sell over and over again. I'm not saying the above company does that. But those licences don't always do updates. Hence the 365 subscription as I had 9 computers to install it on using 6 accounts.​

Whilst that actual device comment still left me wondering, an entry further down the page leaves no room for doubt.


I have not seen such a limitation and do not know what special Preinstalled-OEM-style licence is involved. I couldn't find it in the MS licence list I posted a link to.

I have Office Professional Plus 2010. I also use Visio 2010. The only parts of Office I really use is Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. I didn't install all the other stuff like Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, Access, etc.

I have the same verison, oddly Word always seems to have odd issues after updating to Windows 10and Windows 11 did not fix these. Typeing always had an odd delay, and if you are doing lots of typing in Word its annoying, out of fustration I went the subscription route.

Yeah, and coupled with fact that you can share the account across friends and families. I mean, at $129.99 a year, that's $21.67 a person for the year. I share my sub with my dad and a friend, outside of my wife and kids.

Office 365 debuted in 2013 and was $99.99 for the home premium version. It had 1 price increase to $129.99 in Feb of 2025...and that was because it added the Copilot AI features for the account owner. You can switch back to a classic subscription via the cancel button in the sub and you will continue to get the $99 price tag.

Just use a custom xml for install to limit it to only the desired programs.

Gosh, I don’t see that at all! It works just like it did on Windows 7, which is when I started using it in 2010. It’s like an old shoe now, comfortable. I moved briefly to Windows 8.1, but stuck with Windows 7 until Windows 10 came out. My Office worked fine on all of these Windows versions.

It was a strange issue, I had it on my machine and my wife's. odd when I tried it opn my Windows 8.1 machine there were no issues, and it only affected Word.

The installer should give the user this option (as it used to), having to go and create custom xml files should not be something an average user should need to do. I can understand the benefits in large organisations where there are large deployments of software.

My version went from R1299.00 to R1999.00 in one year, which is quiet an increase. The original price I paid was R599.00 (all prices in South Africa Rands)

I'm done p*ssin around with Office versions!
I now have Home & Business 2024 on my Laptop, and, Pro Plus 2021 on my Desktop.
80 bucks invested, and, I'm gonna use them till they disintegrate!
And, there's no visible or functional difference between the two!

This may not pertain to anone in this thread, but a few months ago i needed a copy of Visio Pro. I have the 365 office suite desktop apps but of course Visio is not included. I bought a copy of Visio Pro 2021 standalone version icense on Stack Social. Seems like it was <$30. I did not realize it at the time but it would only activate through a Ms account. Generally any MS account. I discovered later that regardless of the required method of activation, it was tied to my particular PC and could not be moved, reinstalled or otherwise used on another PC. Lesson learned.

Ever notice, an Office installer doesn't have a Cancel or Go Back button, like a normal installer???

Been like this for a few years, annoying how they have dumbed things down.

One sees many posts about staying with older versions of MS Office and many say they happily run older versions.

Is that ok?

The answer depends on ones needs.

In simple terms, if you are using it for msinly private use, then the answer is probsbly yes.

However, one should bear in mind, thzt there are potential security issues using older versions so good backup strategies are important (true no matter what version you run).

However, if you are using it to support commercial work, the answer is more conplicated. It is probably no, particularly if you hsve multiple clients, especially if you work on collaborative projects.

The key driver is compatibility i.e. you need to be sure your version is 100% compatible with client version. This generally means keeping up to to date with layest versions of Word.

I have had issues in the past where my personal version was later than a client version but that is rare as most clients (especially large ones) tend to use corporate Office 365 versions.

Herein, use of MS Office 365 is to many a good solution. That is a whole new discussion which is not directory related to this thread.

it is noted here though that the degree of compatibility needed with business clients depends a lot on the work being performed.

The key point is if one runs older versions, one may not be able to open/run newer versions or not play as nicely. As a simple example, Word documents with embedded pictures can upset formatting when opened on older version

I'm with you on this. I love the way Microsoft handles the licensing with 365. I reinstall Windows frequently on some machines but I can always reinstall 365 with no difficulties. I have the family plan even though I am the only person using it. But that plan lets you share with other people. I simply share with other accounts of my own. All legit, but it lets me install on a lot of machines and reinstall anytime I need.

If I decommision a machine, I simply go to my account online and remove the license from any machine where I no longer need it, freeing it for another machine.

I have absolutely no problem with licensing when it is done right like this.
