Windows 11 Pro 25H2 (OS Build 26200.8246)
As I write this post, I am testing yet another Windows 11 Pro 23H2 install on an OLD PC.

This is a DELL Optiplex 780 with an Intel E8400 CPU

Instruction set x86-64 (64 bit)
ISA extensions MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE 4.1
Release date Q1/2008

Miraculously, it's working fine! Decent web browsing on only 4GB ram and a 1TB SATA drive.
Obviously because of the SSE4.1 (and not SSE 4.2) on the CPU, it's limited to Windows 11 Pro 23H2 ONLY (and not 24H2 or 25H2).
Pretty decent to be able to have a useful web browser and YouTube watching PC that is this old with a decent semi-current OS!


I'm wondering if anyone else has any old PC successful Windows 11 working installs?

Curious how old and with what specifications (cpu, ram, video, hdd, etc)


Anyone care to share?(y);-)

Since the SSE4.2 requirement the oldest CPU capable of running 24H2 was from 2008. SSE4. 2 was first introduced in Intel Nehalem (1st gen Core i7) in November 2008. The first AMD CPUs with SSE4.2 support were launched in October 2011.

I have a few old machines that lack SSE4.2, 23H2 is the last build they can run.

My oldest machine that runs 25H2 is a Dell Latitude E4310 from 2010 with a 1st gen i5-520M. It has been running Windows 11 since the launch in October 2021.

With the RAM upgraded to 8GB and a SATA SSD I have it multi-booting 25H2 and, as native boot .vhdx, Insider builds up to the latest Canary build. It's System Two in 'My Computers' below.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
@Bree That's fantastic, a 2010 CPU running Windows 11. Proof that Windows 11 is a great OS and especially great once tweaked just right - know what I mean?

i have done this to install Windows 25H2 within Gnome boxes on a Linux system
which seems to bypass the requirements for SSE4.2 as Gnome boxes doesn't have SSE4.2.

make two bootable USB's with Rufus
1. with Windows 11 25H2
2. with Windows 10 22H2

A. now remove all the boot folders from 25H2 (cut and paste) and place them into a folder on your system.
B. copy and paste all the boot folders from the Windows 22H2 into the same folders
you removed the boot folders from on the Windows 25H2 USB.

now boot this Windows 25H2 Rufus USB with the 22H2 boot folders
and the install 'should' start. as Windows 22H2 doesn't have the restrictions imbedded
that Windows 25H2 has. it 'should' be possible to install Windows 25H2 on systems that don't comply
with the Microsoft restrictions that have been imposed for the install of Windows 25H2.

i have only done this on Virtual Media within a Linux system
i don't know if this would work directly on an older system as i haven't tested it.

I had Windows 11 running 100% on an i7 990x (original i7 but the extreme version) 2 GTx 1080ti in sli and 24GB ram no issues at all. it even used to boot off an HDD. This was in an X58 Asus motherboard.

Before upgrading the CPU, I used to have an i7 920 installed, with a heavy overclock. so that's a CPU from the end of 2008

Sadly, after shipping this PC halfway across the world, it started to play up, and its currently in storage. I do plan to revive it though at some stage.

My oldest system is a HP Compaq 8100 Elite CMT.
1st gen i7, 24gb DDR3 ram, 240gb SSD, GT8800 graphics card.
Currently running windows 11 22H2, it's a test rig for when I'm working on other computers. I'll get around to upgrading it to probably 25H2 at some stage to see how it will handle it.

This machine is used as a media pc for watching tv shows and movies.

Kodi is installed and used for media.

This windows install is completely stock, not running any start menu or any other type of program to modify windows explorer or start menus. Only uninstalled pre installed apps.

My oldest machine that runs 25H2 is a Dell Latitude E4310 from 2010 with a 1st gen i5-520M. It has been running Windows 11 since the launch in October 2021.

With the RAM upgraded to 8GB and a SATA SSD I have it multi-booting 25H2 and, as native boot .vhdx, Insider builds up to the latest Canary build. It's System Two in 'My Computers' below.

Well played @maur0 the Xeons handle Windows 11 Pro very well all up to 25H2!

I DO recommend SSD or NVME drives though (of course), with decent ram. Go for ECC if you can!

Now, depending on the Xeon, they COULD be 2017!

@PCUser have asus rampage iv extreme with xeon e5-2697v2 Do you think DDR3 ECC memory would work here? In theory, the motherboard doesn't support RDIMM or ECC, but the CPU does.

The oldest PC I have run 23H2 or earlier on was a Samsung NP-R519 from 2009 with a Celeron T3100 that came with 2GB RAM (which I upgraded to 4GB) and 32-bit Win7 Pro, since upgraded to 32-bit Win10 Pro. I had to scrap that one when the screen broke, replacing it and swapping HDD/RAM/etc. into another R519 with a Pentium T4300, neither of those CPUs have SSE4.2.

Although it's capable of running Win11 23H2, that reaches EoL on November 11, 2025. I have it running its Win10, enrolled for ESU until October 2026.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
