Online Cloud Backup

Hi,

what do you guys use for online cloud backup? I’m looking for a great backup service to store my data online so I never lose my data again?

My internet is rather slow compared to most here, plus I have a lot of data. I do not backup to the cloud but use 2 external hard drives which I alternate. I do a full system image once a week using Macrium. It takes 12 minutes. A full system restore also takes less than 15 minutes. I'll also make an image if I do anything major to my system. These images have saved my bacon more than once.

IMO, Onedrive is simply the best because of the way it integrates into Windows, particularly with its Files on Demand. It syncs well across multiple Windows devices.

Only minor downside is pethaps it is a little clunky on android (no idea about overpriced IOS) but it works well enough.

In the end, choice of providers comes down to cost and infrastructure. People will advise all sorts of cloud services but the most important consideration is trust.

I would not trust any service other than the key majors as you have no idea about the financial stability e.g. Amazon, Google, Onedrive are all underpinned by major stable organisations, and it is unlikely these will "crash financially". Of course the majors have solid backup infrastructures - data loss is less likely.

Of course, you should backup critical data elsewhere as extra peace of mind.

You will go a long way to find a better deal than Office 365 plus 1 TB Onedrive space (you can actively use office on up to 6 devices as well).

Bear in mind, total reliance on cloud means you always need internet available.

Like @glasskuter, I have a lot of data and a pretty slow upload speed. So, online backups take forever. I back up using external USB-C SSDs.

There are many online services out there, and people here will only discuss what they know. What services have you evaluated?

Like @cereberus, I also use Microsoft OneDrive and subscribe to Microsoft 365, giving me 1 TB OneDrive cloud. I keep all my data in my local OneDrive folder. This gives me real-time mirroring of my local OneDrive in OneDrive cloud. I also do a local Microsoft File History backup. For me OneDrive is by far the best solution as it's built into the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

Like @TraderGary, I subscribe to Microsoft 365 and use OneDrive to back up my important files and folders. I also do weekly imaging of my main computer to external drives.

OneDrive user here with my Office 365 subscription. All of my pictures and documents that I want to keep are stored there. I do occasional macrium backups to external drives for my workstation.

Triple backup is basics then. Even if you use a reliable provider like MS or Google, you can loose access to your account or it can get disabled. It is preferable to use at least one offline backup, if possible. USB would do and you can carry it with you at all times. Make sure to backup the essential data first, people have many data, but the most important ones usually take the least amount.

I agree OneDrive is the best. It certainly is my top 3 must have app beside Microsoft Office and OneNote.

That said, what do you mean by its clunky on Android. I use it on my Android device (Samsung Galaxy Note 20), and it works without issue, but my needs are simple, as I just gather files from within if I need something.

BTW, I was using Carbonite's cloud backup service (Carbonite Safe @119 annually) and liked it, but recently cancelled due to restructuring of finances - too many subscriptions. That said, once I get things settled, I'll probably go back as I really liked the service.

I just find the onedrive interface.on android rather clunky and not that slick.

One drive even without Office/365 is cheap enough -- 1TB storage costs around 2 EUR a month (cheaper if you just pay 12 months up front). Accessible from Linux too (install rclone) and Android although the Android app could (and should) be improved a lot. as @cereberus says in his post. I Don't know or care about iPhones or CR-(apple) stuff.

But I suggest with any cloud service these caveats :

Don't store personal confidential data, other people's intellectual copyright material (unless you have OK from rights holders), pirated material or other content that could make you "A person of interest" with all sorts of civil and criminal penalties possible including serious jail time.

In any case always back up critical stuff to external HDD's as well -- you can never have "too much backup". I'd hate to re-rip around 4,000 audio cd's and re-tag them even if I could find and read the discs. !!!!

If that's the extent of your answer, all I can say is I don't find it "clunky", but that's me. I can move and view files as easily as I can on my desktop. I guess it depends on the phone and app version.

I agree. It could also depend on Internet connection speed. My phone is a current Google PIxel 6 Pro, and my Internet connection speed is 700Mbps/24Mbps. My Android OneDrive is fast, intuitive, and certainly not "clunky".

I was a Mozy customer until they were absorbed by Carbonite so now I'm a Carbonite customer and happy with it.
