Open password protected docx document Windows 11 pro

Hello to everyone :)
It’s the first time I write a post here, so I hope I don’t mess up…
Very sadly, my sweet dad unexpectedly passed on November 28th and unfortunately left us with a lot of problems accessing his computer and phone. For the holidays, I’m staying with my mom and Im trying to help her with all this and, after many hours and a lot of investigations, I’m super happy because I finally guessed the password to his computer. Unfortunately, we need access to a docx document which I found but which is protected with a password. I have tried all the passwords I could come up with and no luck

I also tried to follow some advice I found on the internet about zipping the file, uploading it to his google drive, etc. but it didn’t work…
Does anyone have a suggestion as how to be able to access the password protected document?
I have been looking at online programs to do it, but I’m worried there will be malware in them….
And I don’t really want to make the situation any worse….

Try this site.

Chances are the password is the same on all/any that are password protected. Password protection can and typically also means encrypted which is why most tricks won't work. If you have a document that is known not to contain sensitive data. If you want to DM one to me I would be happy to attempt to crack. I have done my fair share of password cracking

Unfortunately it does have sensitive data, so I’m a little bit worried about uploading it to an external service…. Or sending it to someone….

We would be willing to download a software for a fee…
The passwords are all different, my dad was very thorough… I have spent all day with this ::sigh::, it’s already 6 pm here…

If you can install python and grab the office2john.py file here john/run/office2john.py at bleeding-jumbo · openwall/john

When you install python make sure to include the PATH variable.
From a cmd/powershell/terminal run

python office2john.py <an office doc> It should output a long string that should be enough to attempt a crack and is only the password hash


Depending how long the passwords are (if your dad was thorough). They're probably long passwords and no software is going to help

I think I’ll rest a little bit and give it another try tomorrow! I have to call the phone company to get his PIN number now…

For MSOffice 2007 & onwards, MSOffice password protection is excellent.
Don't waste your life trying to hack it; you will fail.
You haven't a chance unless the password is ridiculously short and you are prepared to pay a crook to try to hack it.

Perhaps he kept a written list of passwords somewhere.
