Hi folks

Seems everybody and every business on the planet is just getting greedier and greedier --

Opensubtitles.org was a great free service especially if you used kodi on a firestick / similar and you could while watching a TV / movie just request the subtitle--now it's shut (since 1st Jan) --if you try and download subtitles you just get a continuous message "become a VIP member --osdb.xxx" or similar.

This is the "generic subtitle" that now appears

00:00:00,001 --> 04:00:00,003
Become OpenSubtitles.org VIP Member
to get subtitles -> osdb.link/vip

I'm no socialist by any means but I really resent what's happening now where absolutely everybody and everything is trying to make the last possible cent out of anybody. This doesn't augur well for 100,000's of people out there who are quite happy to develop open source stuff in their own free time.

just look at hideous customer service from most businesses these days -- 'nuf said on that --although Amazon actually has a better record (surprisingly) on that than 99% of utility / broadband /state / federal /city depts etc.

Anyway end of complaint --but is there another subtitle service which works and is free to use.

subscene.com might be possible but avoid some links which just take you to a load of porn stuff. If you navigate your way around that horror show it seems you have to download to computer first.

You get the file as a.zip but you then need to unzip it then and move to a place where kodi etc can then find it with the "browse" for subtitle" option. Works but a bit convoluted !!.

I'd like something that kodi can pick up from a firestick and download just like opensubtitles.org did.

cheers
jimbo

Yeah it seems a little off. My memory of open subtitles is that all the subtitles are user/member supplied. So who gets the money… we must have to pay to use the database lol
If they aren’t generating cash from some sort of ad or cash for click scripts, maybe they need server costs. Or maybe they have no idea what they’re doing.

Doesn’t plex use them as well? That’ll cause some tears
