Solved Snipping tool seems broken any alternatives

Hi folks
Snipping tool seems suddenly to have some problmes --message "This app can't open" - A problem with Windows is preventing this app from opening.

Any fixes, get arounds or alternative programs -- running on Build 22000.282 - on a physical machine i.e not a VM

You can repair or reset Snipping tool from Settings --> Apps --> Installed apps --> Snipping Tool --> Advanced options.

Thanks -- Good suggestion - I think I like it better as well.

This was the original problem with snipping tool

basically in English saying App can't be opened -- Something in Windows is preventing this app from opening.

That doesn't work - you can uninstall but the app isn't currently available in the store !!!

I uninstalled snipping tool new store version from my computer.

You can find windows 8.1 snippingtool.exe on internet if you like legacy one.

I use winkey+shift+s and winkey+printscreen on my computer fro screenshots.
FreeShooter is a nice and smallsize alternative to get screenshots.

Did you install the additional updates --that's when I think it broke.

The only optional are for one of my printers and Realtek USB if having problems, so far none.

Import ST.exe and ST.mui from a W10 PC and inject them into System32 and en-US, (or whatever your locale is), respectively...

I have the same problem after I installed Windows 11 as an upgrade from Windows 10. Weirdly at first what I was seeing as Snipping Tool was the old program interface that said a new Snipping Tool would be available in the near future. However, the Windows logo key + Shift + S combination did not work with it although it used to work with Windows 10. After the upgrade I finished installing a couple of Windows 11 updates. Then (after a couple of necessary restarts) the new Snipping Tool interface appeared in place of the old one, but again the Windows logo key + Shift + S doesn't work with it. I get the same message as has been posted here.

I considered installing Screenshot Captor from For Software Connoisseurs - Homepage - DonationCoder.com, but in the end I decided to leave things as they are and I'll be using the screenshot feature of FastStone Viewer which I already have installed. I rarely use screenshot captures and I didn't feel it necessary to have a special program for them.

EDIT: I finally installed Screenshot Captor, not really because I needed all its features, but hey... I was tempted.

Use the old Snipping Tool, Jim.

Not too many Microsoft application updates have changed for the best in recent times.
The new Paint is another good example of that. It is horrendous.

The best Snipping Tool (without the "Snipping Tool is moving..." ads) is from Windows 10 Version 1803.
It is simple and does the job as intended.

That works -- I missed the st.mui bit so that's why I think it failed. Only a temporary solution of course. Not marking as "Solved" as this is a get around and will probable need to be re-applied until Ms fix the issue. +1 for you.

That sure did not remove very cleanly after trying it lol
The non installer left sludge one entry in taskbar overflow and installing it and uninstalling it left even more sludge there were now two taskbar overflow entries lol :eek:

I tried it to see what the video recorder was like 30fps max on the free I guess so no good plus no sound devise found lol
Changed it to 60 fps manually it looked terrible still no sound after some messing around realtek driver....
Hope others have better luck with it I sure didn't.

Can confirm, turned off Automatic time, clicked change at Set the Date and Time Manually, rolled back the date to October 30th and the snipping tool started working. Reset the Date to today and turned automatic time back on and snipping tool continues to work fine
