Solved Opinion: Notepad (with tabs) is terrible.


Notepad++ all the way for me. I look at a lot of code and it's handy to just load it with Notepad++ to read it if I need something quick. It's a PITA to load a full blown IDE just to look at a code file. Visual Studio Pro can take up to 30 seconds to load, then you have to load the project and the file you want to look at. The nice thing about Notepad++ is that it does many languages with full formatting, syntax and color highlighting. It's very easy to see variables and whatnot, as well as make small changes if necessary.

The new Windows Notepad is interesting and works ok I suppose, but I find it rather limiting for what I do. Except for dashing off a quick note, maybe. I don't find it good for anything else.

And exactly that is what holds me away from Notepad++. I do no real programming anymore (only some CSS files, for which I have the Stylus extension), so Notepad++ has much too much distracting menu options, which (as far as I have seen) can't be simply switched off.

For that reason I am glad I discovered Akelpad some time ago, that for simple text files without formatting is just what I want. No tabs!

So you see: every user has his/her favorite app for the purpose he/she uses most! ;-)

On the particular subject of "I find it rather limiting for what I do". Those who prefer to use the paid version of Sublime Text to look at a lot of code very often tend to say the same exact thing about Notepad++. The Notepad app that comes bundled with Windows is intended to be simplistic, and nothing is wrong with that intention per se, but the main problem I have with it sometimes is that it is too severely dumbed-down even for that, as it cannot even be used for some very basic things, such as counting the number of words within a selected text fragment, for example.

Agreed. Another limitation that I didn't think of. I have not tried Sublime Text. I think I might have a look at it. Even though I don't use Notepad++ for actual coding, it does serve my needs. But something more powerful is always welcome. Thanks for the tip.

Greetings Edwin. I have just bought a Samsung S9 FE tablet and I use Keep Notes as well.
I synced everything over from a Samsung A7 Lite tablet.
As I am new to the S9 FE, I am hoping you could perhaps link me to a tutorial, or something similar, on what I need to do to use my voice to compile a reminder in Keep? Thank you.

I use Google Assistant, but, it saves to Google Tasks...,
to edit a note into a Reminder in Keep, it seems you have to do it manually.

i use notepad++ for a compare plugin that I have.

For any code related things, I use visual studio code. One of the best pieces of software microsoft has ever put together.
