Solved Opinion: Notepad (with tabs) is terrible.


In my system I have been using Classic Notepad as well. Because I don't like the newer Notepad app either.

The only disadvantage of the classic notepad is, that it does not do a multiple CTRL Z Undo.
Which sometimes is very problematic if I use it for editing .css files.

Since I discovered the application Akelpad, freeware to be downloaded here, I use that instead of the classic notepad. It already is older as well (2016, July). You can install it in such a way, that it takes over the function of the (classic) notepad. And it is in several languages, mine as well! It has a useful search/replace function as well, It does not have functions to be used for programming purposes like Notepad++, but that's exactly how I like it!

PS. Akelpad can fill in date and time as well via the menu or via a command (CTRL D).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

I've noticed with other programs the hover only shows what programs are open and clicking one brings it into focus, not the views within a program. An example would be having 5 instances of File Explorer open at the same time with each showing a different folder and each instance having 1 or multiple tabs open.

Used Notepad++ for most part - so the multi-tab feature is something i was already used to and find it highly practical - but still had Notepad as default text viewer/writer - used more or less as a Post-it. So yeah, multi-tab is a nice touch imo. As for loading speed - it's still a small app so loads rather fast - but it probably has 3x more libraries compared to old versions - so maybe it takes an extra second. Tho, i don't remember ever taking even up-to 5 seconds - let alone 20+ and sometimes - it does take a month without touching it (if not more). Tried Notepad2 (and 3) couple of times - which seems to be a mix between Notepad and Notepad++ but didn't like it. Yet, it's definitely faster in terms of opening speed (couple of milliseconds).

After reading this I decided to open my new Notepad app. It fired right up but I had multiple tabs already visible all with the same document....config.ini. I think it still gets used depending on how/what I am opening. I've been using Notepad++ for a long time now.

It's an option in new Notepad's settings, by default it opens with all the documents you had open before. You can (and I do) turn this off.

Using multiple tabs for the same file is a terrible idea, I lost hours of work because of this.
Notepad3 notifies me, when the file is changed, so I am fully aware of it, unlike in Notepad.

The wonderful aspect of the windows environment is there is usually a solution for everyone. I find the new Notepad fast to open, tabs are great, reopening of tabs is useful, and the spell checker is helpful. The only feature that I would like is a list of previous opened files.

I use ConText editor when I need to open multiple versions of a file.

Yeah a jump list like you get in Word (recent files) would be great.

But of course, that would be too radical for some users 😉.

You can get a jump list, just not in Notepad itself. Pin Notepad to the Taskbar and right-click on it....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

I'll tell ya what I hate about container apps, though...,
it's the annoying mouse hover tips that always get in the way!!!
