Outlook (New) - cannot open .pst files

Hi there
I've a load of old emails etc archived / copied into.pst files -- If these can't be opened in the new outlook then that's a show stopper for me --I'm not going to convert a load of old email archives with attachments in cases into a load of new folders -- in any case I don't need this stiff to be online every time I open outlook -- and even sillier if you are using a phone.

I just wonder if Ms EVER does any User requirements -- the new app might be faster, slimmer, more secure or whatever but if it lacks a basic functionality that I'm sure many users still need then it's pointless to go down that road with a new app unless you provide a similar functionality in the new one (or at least say the feature is a forthcoming addition later.

Are your referring to the New Outlook being introduced to the Office Suite (Classic Outlook)
Or the New Outlook Windows App?

I ask because you’ve been playing with the New Office LTSC. I hope you’re not referring to Outlook in the office Suite. That would actually bug me.

I'm using preview Office Pro LTSC 2024 - there's a button at least that says enable new outlook and it warns about the .pst files (also says you can switch back at any time).

I don't have Office/365 but users of that system could perhaps post and see if the same thing in Outlook/365 is done or are they switched automatically.

I’ll be using Microsoft Office Pro 2021 until they set Outlook in that on fire.

Problem is when. I don't want to have to keep switching between the two and manually open the .pst folder(s) even if the switch between old and new outlook is visible on the top toolbar -- who knows when in a future release they hide this option in some weird hidden config file or a registry option. IMO the .pst feature should have been there from the start.

Would something like this be of use or for your purposes or just something else getting in the way? I've never used the program but its supposed to read .pst files.

It might work -- but that's not the point -- having to use 2 different apps where only one did it before is just plain bonkers --plus if the main outlook app can't read / write to .pst files then you can't save the emails from the IMAP folder(s) on your email server(s).

No --I'll just wait until the functionality is restored or a conversion from .pst to something outlook (new) can use and save stuff locally rather than leave on the server(s).

This is just my opinion.

Regardless of what anyone has ever said to me or that I have read, any modern Microsoft Mail Client that lives outside of a Microsoft Office Suite, or comes bundled as a default part of Windows, is in my opinion an “APP”.
Microsoft Office is “SOFTWARE” Therefore to me, so is Outlook from the Office Suite (What Microsoft is now calling “Classic Outlook”) it is not an APP.

An app to me belongs on a phone or device or something Microsoft has introduced because they can’t get their ducks in a row, or something that cannot be installed in Windows in the traditional sense.

When I refer to Microsoft Outlook from Microsoft Office, I have bent to Microsoft and now call it “Classic Outlook”
Anything else, is the “Microsoft Mail & Calendar (Mail) APP” the “Outlook APP” and the “New Outlook App”.

Not to forget the old Outlook Express May it rest in peace (pieces).

I believe that option is time sensitive, Jimbo. Eventually, the toggle will be gone and we will have no choice. There is (or was?) a toggle in Outlook 2021 also.

Jimbo, I believe what is happening (from what I could scrape together)

Microsoft admitted failings due to the vast array of Outlook versions available at this current point in time. So their answer, from what I can ascertain, is to have created a new version of Outlook (the New Outlook ) which will eventually swallow whole all other versions of Outlook.

Currently, as you brought to my attention, if you use the toggle in Outlook within the Office Suite (2024 LTSC) you end up with the New Outlook app? (Or a version of the New Outlook App)
The New Outlook App does not have the capability to support PST files, hence the warning you mentioned.

On the other hand, Microsoft is trying to incorporate PST support in the “New Outlook APP”. So eventually, Outlook in the new Office Suite, will once again have PST support if you have toggled the option.

I don't think I've ever done the PST thing! I don't even know what it is!!!

I just drag important emails into a folder..., the rest get deleted..., period...

PST is for POP3
What folder do you drag email into? Is it a folder in your IMAP account?

If you’re using a Microsoft email address, then all good. Same goes for Gmail probably because these companies are unlikely to disappear. The problem lies for personal domains and email accounts setup to use IMAP. The lifespan of a hosting company in Australia isn’t always garanteed to last forever or even 10 years in many cases.

When a hosting company goes bust or just closes it’s doors, off go the servers. Your IMAP accounts are gone, what is on your PC isn’t guaranteed to be secured because the average user has no idea what to do about it. And unless you had warning so you could move to another hosting company and have your site and email accounts migrated, you’re possibly in for some issues.

You can still use IMAP and have a PST file loaded into your email client (that supports PST, like Outlook 2010 to 2021)
Dragging important IMAP to PST is just something I have always done. I use them like a filing cabinet.
I have my own server based in Missouri after moving it from Texas, (I don’t trust Australian companies much) but nothing is forever. American companies can be just as fickle.

I’ve had this process criticised in here before, don’t really care about opinions on this. But there are so many PST readers available, it’s how I proffer to setup my accounts, just in case.
