Outlook password request

Outlook is preventing me from sending or receiving messages to my account

When I bring up Outlook I immediately get the Internet Email messages:

Window 1: Enter your username and password for the following server…smtp.gmail.com
Window 1: Enter your username and password for the following server…pop.gmail.com

It didn’t bother me, Outlook has gotten confused before. Solving this problem was no more difficult than filling in the correct password…

This time Outlook doesn’t relent.
I know my password is correct because a) Outlook was working fine a couple weeks ago. b) I confirm the password by bringing up Gmail and entering that password…and it works.

Is there a straightforward way to address the password query Outlook is issuing?

I would rebuild your profile and delete any cache credentials
1. Go to Control Panel, click small icons in the top right, select "Mail (Microsoft Outlook)"
2. Click "Show Profiles" and Remove the profile and select "Apply"
Before opening outlook again
3. Go to C:\Users\youruser\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook and delete any email odt file you see (you should see your full email address)
4. Go to C:\Users\youruser\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache and delete everything in that folder
5. Go to Windows Credential Manager and delete any outlook credentials you see, if you don't see any thats fine
6. restart the computer
7. when you open the outlook app again its going to have you resign into your emails

Hi, J-Man.

I think you are once again confusing your Gmail password with the Gmail app password which has been explained to you to no end

And I wouldn't be deleting or removing anything from anywhere at this point.


In short:

Create an App Password for Gmail

1. Visit your App passwords page in Gmail. You may be asked to sign in to your Google Account.
2. At the bottom, click Select app and choose the app you're using. ...
3. Click Select device and choose the device you're using. ...
4. Click Generate.
5. Be sure to copy the password that was generated.

I'm fairly sure that I (and especially @glasskuter) have gone over this with you a few times, J-Man

If you read the OP's post, this is a Gmail issue not an Outlook issue. Please be careful before instructing people to remove/delete/change anything.

You're completely right.

When, way back when, when I did the app password thing, I thought that was a one-time annoyance I would never have to revisit. So my app passwords were named things like fff www ppp

Yeah mate, I’m surprised it is asking again.
Perhaps you need to generate a new one every 6 months (or some time frame) I haven’t read the details to know for a fact

Maybe you can delete those? I don’t know.

From now on name them by date.

App password date/date/date (or however you Americans do this)

Not that it should matter anyway.

Check by going to your gmail account through your browser and logging in and if you need to, reset your password in there. Then copy it into your Outlook app.

That's what I do whenever I need to look at my email account settings and changing passwords. I bypass any external apps by going to the source. Save time and trouble.
