32GB of RAM here. Have a question, is there a difference in performance for the Paging file in Windows 11 if it is set to System Managed vs Custom Sized? If Custom Sized, what should I set it to? Thanks!

No difference in performance. With 32GB of memory, you don`t need a page file.

I haven`t used a page file in over 10 years, no need unless a program demands it, and you`ll gain valuable space back from your SSD.

Not to mention the wear and tear :)

Doesn't it depend on how many tasks one is using as my main usage is really I have like 200 browser tabs in Chrome and Microsoft EDGE combined even though most are sleeping. That was why I thought the system managed is better because it won't take up a big amount of space unless it needs it compared to the custom set sized page file.

No page file will make some Apps act up, set to a Fixed 4GB (even on a smaller SSD not much to loose) and forget about it and even Photoshop will work with that size.

SDD will wear anyhow due to Windows constant small writes, my OS is 95% Health but Storage (including all my downloads) is still 100%.

By time is is far less it will be time for an upgrade to faster OS drive but it is a Samsung 860 Pro so the fastest 2.5" SSD you get and the Storage drives are 2x 4TB 860 Evo's.

You can reduce the amount of PageFile fragmentation by configuring costume size.

1. Disable PageFile by clicking “No Paging file”.
2. Click Set button and click OK.
3. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
4. Type Defrag C: /x /h to perform free space consolidation on the specified volume.
5. After free space consolidation, finish.
6. Set paging file to a fixed size.
7. Click “Custom size
8. Type 1.5 times of RAM installed on PC so if you PC has 500 MB RAM type 750 into “Initial size (MB)” and “Maximum size (MB)” fields.
9. Click Set and OK button in the Virtual Memory window to accept changes.

1.5x (the Windows default in past) was ok in days of 256MB/1GB of memory but now that would be massive as many have 16GB-32GB, and SSD's not large Mech HDD's

There is no need for any more than 4-8GB Fixed for any App I have seen (Photoshop etc),

You want a page file of, I believe it is, around 900 MB in order to be able to take a system crash dump if you crash. Besides that, you will likely not need any more than that with that much RAM.

You can reduce the amount of PageFile fragmentation by configuring costume size.
And if your pagefile is on an SSD then fragmentation has no bearing on performance.

Hard to give system specs because I might change systems as it's only a temporary system and I meant in general. I did put specs in the first post.

I'm always upgrading but I update the specs at the time.
Need to find time for it first as getting older in life, there are other priorities since I haven't even had time to unpack the 250+ 25kg boxes here yet after moving and will not unpack or actually be picky about a system as the entire house will be completely torn down and what I buy couldn't be used for 2 years so it will just be collecting dust. But regardless, what other specs do you really need because it's really a simple one, does custom paging size offer any performance advantages over system managed and remember it's about how much physical ram there is which I already mentioned in the original post. Don't need to make it more complicated than that as it is more of a generic question about your personal experience with your system.

A number of aspects of your systems configuration could affect pagefile performance here. While its mostly down to the drives and RAM, CPU could play a small part too.

It would just be helpful in case of future help you require that we can just simply check your specs without needing to ask.

Good points. The issue with CPUs to be honest is I liked how it was done in the old days where the speed is specified and easily remembered instead of how it's called now like Intel Core i7 8750H for example that unless I looked it up online, I wouldn't even remember what it is. Just the site is new and I need to find some time to put all the correct info in which I wouldn't know off the top of my head as these are notebooks and not machines where I built it myself and know the actual specs.

One program I used to use is Speccy from the makers of ccleaner, but it's not been updated since 2018 so won't have any information on Ryzen builds. Should be fine for your era machine though.

I have 16GB of RAM... I just set the Page File at 3072 MB, for both min and max.
I don't think any Page File is necessary, but it IS supposed to remember which programs you use all the time... ??

As for Speccy... it sees my Ryzen CPU? 3000 series at least. :)

This pic is from May 2021.
