Solved Paint Shop Pro 4.12 and 7.04 and 8.1 and 9.01

If it were me, I'd completely uninstall PSP 9 using REVO un-installer (free), and make sure yuou "Scan" for leftovers and remove them too.

Then re-install PSP 9 again, and see if you still have the problem.

Thanks. See my EDIT above. Got it working. Thanks for the idea with File Associations.

I'm new here and came across this post by luck.
I've been using PSP since version 5 and have been using version 9.1 for over 20 years.
I use PSP under Win 7 and can only say that it has its problems.
Firstly, PSP 9 uses DDE to open files which results in an error message and PSP crashes very often when you move help lines.
Only saving helps with crashes caused by moving the help lines. Always save before touching the help lines.
2025-06-29_100719.webp

There is also a workaround for the DDE problem (see link).
However, I have deactivated all file shortcuts in PSP and created them manually via the Explorer.

WebP Format
To open the WebP format I use an old plugin for Photoshop.
But it can no longer handle every file.

ICO (Windows Icon) file format plugin

PSP Thumbnail Handler
For the thumbnails I use the one from Bot Productions, but I don't know if it works with 11.

Here is a link to the Jasc FTP server in the Internet Archives. There are patches, demos, manuals, working files....

The PSP programs in the first post work fine... just as they are, on Win 10 and Win 11.

It would be nice to find some decent "filter" plugins though.

@Ghot
I use these filters most often.

Locas Software 3D Shadow

Fantastic Machines Paint Engine

Colormancer Tint- & Boundary Noise Reduction Plugin

Some Free Filters by Cybia Software:

However, I have a huge mountain of downloaded filters that I have never tested.
In principle all plugins up to Photoshop 7 should work but there are exceptions.
Free filters have always been rare and often not really usable or appeared that way.
Good filters have always cost money and are no longer available (or only in the latest version).

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing issues with PSP 9. Mine stopped working suddenly, always freezing upon start-up "initializing pallets". I uninstalled it, downloaded the ISO again, extracted, ran the installer and same issue. Not sure if a new Windows 11 update broke something....

Running fine here on 24H2.

I don't know if it matters, but there were four updates to PSP V9 that are supposed to be installed.

I have them all installed and it's running fine. That doesn't mean they will correct your issue, of course. But if you don't have them, it might be worth a shot.

Thank you for providing these older versions of this great software. After using PSP v7.00 for over 20 years, I upgraded today to v7.04 and the few improvements they made are many MANY of the small things that I found annoying.

Bravo!

I realize this is a very old thread but am I going to have to mount the ISO image every time I want to use this? I purchased psp9 many years ago. I recently had to reset my (win 11) laptop and the program disappeared. I still have the file folder with the tools in it but I can't seem to find the msi file to actually install the program. I mounted the ISO image and opened the Paint Shop Pro 9. msi file. It doesn't seem to have actually installed the program (run as administrator wasn't an option). It's very frustrating, especially since I actually paid for the program years ago. I contacted Corel. Of course their suggestion was to purchase a new version. Can anyone advise?

Hi @lorraineg ,

You can download the zipped file below; it's from my OneDrive.

PhotoShop.zip

1- Unzip it, run the installer PhSp_CS2_English.exe , exit the installer
2- From the CS2-Patcher\dist folder run the cs2.exe to patch and update to 9.02
3- Apply the serial number from the provided text file.
4- Done, safeguard the zip file for future installations.

Please note that this is the same file that @Ghot is mentioning in the next post.
I just bundled it together.

Welcome to ElevenForum.

No. But you need to read the install directions at the bottom of the 1st post of this topic. :-)

PSP9 comes with Animation Shop 3.
Steps 4 and 5 in the install directions are for Animation Shop 3.

Due to popularity, powerful features and ease of use, here are:
Paint Shop Pro 4.12 and 7.04 and 8.1 and 9.01
These are all free, legal and fully functional.

These work flawlessly on all versions of Windows from 7 to 11.
Paint Shop Pro 4.12 and if memory serves, 7.04 also work on Windows XP.

At any of the links below... you want to download the ISO image, on the right side.
I recommend either 7.04 or 9.01

Paint Shop Pro 4.12
(portable & does not include Animation Shop)

Paint Shop Pro 7.04 - 10th Anniversary Edition
(see post #23 to make PSP 7 Large Address Aware)

Paint Shop Pro 8.1

Paint Shop Pro 9.01

See install directions (ZIP files) at
bottom of this post.
________________________________________________________________________________________

PSP 7.04 and Animation Shop 3 - Users Manual (PDF)

Paint Shop Pro 8.0 - User Manual (PDF)

Paint Shop Pro 9.0 - User Manual (PDF)

These all scan 100% clean, locally and at Virustotal.
Scanned on: MARCH 09 2022

I have installed, tested and used, Paint Shop Pro 7.04 and 9.10... and their Animation Shop 3.
In the .zip file below are the installation READMEs for Paint Shop Pro 7.04 and for 9.10
In the other .zip file are the install directions for Paint Shop Pro 4.12

Upon trying to install PSP 9, I am asked for a serial number. What do I enter here? There isn't one in the README file, so I can't seem to go any farther.

At the bottom of post #1 in this topic, are exact directions for installing PSP 9.

You may have to UN-install PSP 9, the re-install it following the directions.

Get REVO Uninstaller and use it to uninstall PSP 9.
Make sure you do the... "Scan" for leftovers.

Then install it exactly as the directions say.

1. Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT.
2. Open the PSP9 folder, and open the Paint Shop Pro 9 folder.
3. Right click: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9.msi ...and choose: Run as Administrator, to install Paint Shop Pro 9.
4. Open the PSP9 folder, and open the Animation Shop folder.
5. Right click: Jasc Animation Shop 3.msi ...and choose: Run as Administrator, to install Animation Shop 3.
