Hi. I'm new here, and was looking for a free PSP download, and found this somehow. This is a long thread, so please forgive me if I ask something stupid that is somewhere else.
I started with PSP7 when it first came out, went to 8.1, then when that didn't work on Windows 10 Pro, I just said "screw it" and forgot about it. Now I have a nice camera and I want to get PSP back.
I know 8.1, but have never used 9. How different are they?I'm going to have to relearn everything, so I thought I might as well just get 9 and learn that one, but just in case I need to drop back to 8.1, does that install the same as 7 and 9? there is no readme file for that.
One more thing, is it easy to find accessories/tubes, etc. for v9?
Thanks for the help. I'm an older lady, and it's been a long time since I learned PSP back in the early 2000s.

I would use PSP 7.04.
PSP 9.01 if you must. I would skip 8.1 all together.
They all work on Win 10 and Win 11.
The install instructions are attached to the first post in this topic.

I never understood why people hated 8.l. It worked great for me, but I never tried to do anything very complex with it. Do they all have Animation Shop, because I seem to remember anything after 7 not having it, and having to install it separately on 8. Does Animation Shop work on 9.01?
Sorry, but I forget half of what I read these days 2 seconds after I read it.

PSP 8.1 doesn't have Animation Shop, and it was sort of a beta prototype for 9.01.
8.1 was really not ready for prime time.
Yes. Animation Shop works on 7.04 and 9.01

Everything you need is in the first post.

@Ghot Perhaps you should change the first post that says PSP 8 does not include animation shop so as to not give inaccurate information.

So thrilled to have found this forum. I started way back with psp 4 - but have been using 7.04 for well over 15 years. I really thought I was alone, holding onto it and pushing it to the next operating system. I have found my people :D

The only thing I find with 7.04 it doesnt do batch or (scripts - as I have rad in the psp 9 manual) I do a lot of product graphics that are very repetitive.

I was wondering, is it possible to have 2 different psp versions on a win11 computer. I want to keep my psp 7.04 and perhaps also install psp 9 ?

In answer to your question, I wouldn't know. I find PSP 7.04 sufficient for all my needs. I don't see why not though, you may have intrigued @Ghot enough to try it and find out (if he hasn't already done so, he is after all the OP of this thread) ;)

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I believe you could.
I was running PSP 7.04, when I tested 4.12, 8.1 and 9.01

You will only be able to set ONE PSP version at a time, as the default for opening images.

Thanks! - a bit nervous about it, so maybe I will wait to hear if anyone else has done 2 versions on Win11 25H2 & are actively using them, and I might be brave enough to try. :)

I unfortunately cant set any PSP as my default for opening images anyway.

If I change the default image program for jpg & png - away from the Win11 native 'Photos' program - then Win11 file explorer right context menu for 'Print' disappears and there is no way to print multiple images. Its been a real pain, but I just open PSP first and then drag and drop images over. is has been the only downside for me using psp 7.04 on Win11
