Solved Partitions increased?

Hi,

I got a new M.2 2280 PCI Gen 4 WD NVMe SSD, replaced by a Dell tech at my office.

He did a W10 install, using MBR I think.

On my insistence I asked him to do a W11 clean install using my Rufus thumb drive. He changed the settings of it to from GPT to MBR (while was occupied).

After he left, I saw these 4 partitions vs. 3. With M2. PCI Gen 3 using the same thumb drive I used to get only 3 partitions.

Created a new Rufus with GPT enabled and installed W11 Pro and still see 4 partitions vs. 3?

My question is is to do with Gen 4 drive, BIOS or didn't create a proper Rufus bootable W11 GPT?

All perfectly normal.
You should have a 16mb MSR Microsoft reserved partition, Recovery partition that would be the 625mb one, an EFI System Partition that must be fat32 normally 100mb and needed to boot and your C: drive.

As you can see GPT is different to MBR and all GPT drives have the 16mb partition.

#1 is the EFI partition, required fo a UEFI system to boot.
#2 is the Microsoft Reserved partition (MSR), present on any GPT formatted drive. This will not be shown in Disk Management.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Thanks @clam1952 , for the expert explanation. Simply saying my Rufus GPT created W11 iso performed a correct clean install.

Thanks @Bree , for the expert explanation. I have a question, why was PCI Gen 3 showing 3 partitions..(possibly be I deleted one in disk management)?

Anyways am getting far better speeds, 2300/700 to 35500/3200 now.

Depends, which partition was missing? If it was the recovery partition then it is possible that WinRE was either not enabled, or it was installed in Setup's second choice if there's not enough space for a recovery partition: C:\Boot\Recovery.

If memory serves right, I think MSR #2, wasn't there.

Anyways, I did create a full backup after clean install of W11 Pro and Off 2021, without any apps.
Should I restore the back up OR perform a clean install again?
How do expert members like, @Edwin , @Ghot run W11 with 4 GB of memory, my never exceeds 7.5 GB, but I feel a lot's of background processes, causing a bloat...….

What did you use to look at the partitions? The MSR is deliberately not shown in Disk Management. It is only visible in Macrium Reflect or other partition managers.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

If Windows was installed on your Gen 3 SSD as MBR, then it would be impossible to create the MSR partition because that can only exist on GPT disks.
