Pausing updates stuck

So my pause updates must have expired because tonight 24H2 appeared and I was asked to restart. So I didn't restart - I selected pause updates again for 5 weeks. Since then it has been permanently stuck on pausing updates. It's been a few hours now with just the flashing line going across like it does until it's completed something and says "pausing updates".

Assuming 24H2 hasn't already installed... use the tutorial below to tell your comp to stay on 23H2...

If you have a backup, you could restore that... then quickly do the tutorial above.

Like...

1. Disable your internet temporarily.
2. Restore the 23H2 backup.
3. Do the tutorial above, setting 23H2 as your target version.
4. Re-enable the internet.

They usually start installing once you choose restart Windows

Once it’s in motion, it’s hard to stop.

A system restore might be needed.

I can’t find the thread I coppied this from

Open Command Prompt as administrator.
Type
net stop wuauserv and press Enter.
Type
net stop bits
and press Enter.

Clear the downloaded update file:

Type into the CMD window (Or click to copy to clipboard)
del /f /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\* and press Enter.

After reboot (Hopefully it doesn’t install)

Then you can restart the Windows Update service through the Services window. —
Services window: Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter

Or you could just let 24H2... happen.

My files are all backed up daily and could back them up now. Been a bit lax with the images as a result so the last one was about a month ago. I’m doing one now but of course the image woukd still have pausing updates on it

. And yes it’ll probably install when The restart. I did let my other laptop update to it recently (identical model) and it seemed ok - but I prefer 23H2

Well as far as I know, the steps I posted above there is a good chance it won’t update. At least that’s what I remember about the end result.

if you don’t try, you’ll never know.

Also, if you create a system image now, you’ll just be copying the state you’re currently in which is a looming 24H2 update. Understanding of course, file backups and a system image are two different things.

Yep just cancelled the image - pointless. Coukd just leave the laptop switched on permanently

Anyway if it goes pearshaped I could just reinstall 23H2 and my files and programs.

Let it install (you don't really have much choice now). You could always 'go back' when it's done....

I totally agree with @Bree. Restart that sucker, knock on wood, cross your fingers, say a prayer, and let 'er rip. You can go back if necessary or use your image. A month old image is way better than most folks have, especially if you have file backups too.

While I did encounter an issue getting to 24h2, now that I'm on it I can't see more than a lick of difference. Maybe I'm not very observant. Luckily, I haven't run up against any of the issues others have reported. Now, I'm waiting to get in line for 25h2 on 2 of my computers, The third is incompatible and on 24h2 so I probably won't be in a hurry to upgrade that one.

Yes the image has all my programs on as well. So would be a good one to reinstall and then just add the files again (if needed). On my other laptop (identical model) I found the graphics a bit jumpy and "flashy" on 24h2. Is it supposed to that thing at the top of the screen that kind of pops down a bit if you move the mouse there? Didn't like that.

Do you mean snap layouts? That's one of my favorite features. But, if that's what you mean, you can disable the feature. There are 2 ways to get snap layouts, one when you drag a window to top of screen and one when you hover over themaximize buttons of a window.

One thing I did like was the more accessible rename button. And I've noticed in 23H2 that rename has become even more obscure. A second menu at the bottom within the second menu after right click. Presumably to encourage people to upgrade

16 months would have been the first release of 24H2 to Insiders. I ran those too, but not on any of my main machines.

You only have to look around the forum threads at issues some members are posting about and the KB Update threads.
I'm hoping 25H2 will be less chaotic.

Every version of Windows has its shortcomings. Just that for me, I seem to have zero with 23H2 ATM, which is why I reverted back after 24H2 testing.

It seems that the majority of problems are with those running outdated hardware. It will be interesting to hear about your experience once you complete your new build.

Is my hardware outdated? 10th generation

I tried 24H2 when it was first released and touchpad was inoperable. That seems to be fixed now (tested on my spare laptop) but it seems a bit "jumpy" generally and haven't fully tested. To me it's as big an upgrade as it was from 10 to 11 in some ways. I was going to stick it out until October and then hope for more improvements.

Btw - so what happens in October when 23H2 is no longer supported and 24H2 has been out for a year? Another big upgrade? 25H1?
