Dear Internet:

Don't know if this belongs in here or not, but I'm stymied.

My Phone Link has stopped receiving texts.
  • It sends texts immediately.
  • Photos taken on the phone appear in Phone Link on PC immediately.
  • Copy-and-paste between PC and phone are fine.
  • The "emulator" - where my phonescreen appears on the PC - works fine.
  • "Sound," "Do Not Disturb," etc., toggle on and off immediately (e.g., PC Phone Link controls the phone).
  • But it does not show any received texts. PC shows "Connected" and accurate phone battery settings.
  • Inbound texts DO show up in the "Notifications" window - but that's just notifying me, it's not the interactive text window.
It behaves like this whether the PC is connected to home network, office network, or VPN. And the phone has been connected to 5G and Wi-Fi. (And previously it operated properly in all of those environments).

I first noticed this in August. If I do a temporary repair (see below), it's fine for a few days. But once it stops receiving texts, it never recovers on its own.

Temporary Repairs Attempted
  • Yes, I've rebooted both devices.
  • I have fully removed the device from my MSFT account and reinstalled it.
  • I have removed the app from my Android and reinstalled it.
  • I found a command line routine that fully deletes Phone Link ("Add/Remove" doesn't allow it); I removed it and reinstalled it.

Ugh. I am guessing I'm the only person this happens to?

Much love,

I chunked the phone Link. You should have a new app named Intel Unison. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the reco. Other than the stability are there compelling reasons to switch?

(Don't get me wrong, Stability is a big factor... It's just I never had trouble with Phone Link before!)

I switched based on having issues getting the phone link to work every time so was having to connect phone to PC with usb a lot. Only recently I discovered the Unison app was automatically installed and I didn't even know what it was for until I researched it. It worked first time. I tied both my iphone and ipad to it. TBH, I do not have a need to connect these devices to my PC that often.

Have a go, uninstall it if you don’t like it. If you have a tablet, you should also be able to use the tablet as an external device/monitor to split your working environment. However I am not sure if that feature has rolled out to all devices yet.

I've tried Phone Link, Intel Unison and My Phone Explorer to figure out the benefits of such software...,
... I found little to none!
Use your Phone as a Phone, use your PC as a PC!!! 🤷‍♂️

I like being able to send/receive texts from my PC. I hate typing on my phone.

And using an iPad as a second monitor is an intriguing idea!

Yes..., Copy/Paste, Download, Save As..., etc...,
even drag-n-drop...
(As far as I could tell, the app only has access to your Photo Gallery)

You're right, Phone Link is feature rich... When it works.

(I've only started the drag-and-drop between phone and PC - I went down a rabbit hole of making custom ring tones. Time well spent.)
