Solved Photo Viewer registry edit didn't work, and now photos don't open up.

I have a registry edit file that makes the old version of photo viewer work. I've used that file with every Windows install dating back to just about Windows 10 and it's always worked until now. Now clicking on a photo does nothing. I can right click it and select open with photos and it will open with the newer windows 11 version of photo. But needless to say I don't want to have to right click every photo to get it to load.
It's possible that the registry edit borked the system, so I'm wondering if I can fix this somehow?

Do you not have a backup image from before you messed with the registry that you can restore? If not you can try system restore.
Rule of thumb...always protect yourself if you are messing with the registry

@Brink's tutorial on Ten Forums works for Windows 11 too, even 24H2. You could try 'Option Two (recommended)' and see if that fixes things.

Windows (UCPD service) now blocks users from changing the default File Type Associations, which the Photo Viewer reg file hack tries to restore.

Run this command as Admin:

Alternatively you could turn off UCPD while you make the changes.

It looks like around 50 separate photo settings in there, and none of them are clickable.

Also the registry files didn't work, either. Seems like it might be the same one i've been using.

I tried running this in a command prompt, and I got this: The process "explorer.exe" with pid 7136 has been terminated.

Would disabling UCPD allow the existing changes to work, or do I need to apply them again?

Edit* I turned it off and the photos don't open. Then I ran the registry file again, and it still doesn't work.

@Brink's instructions didn't include running "sc stop UCPD", to halt the already running service. I'm not what you're doing differently, my test was on a clean install of 23H2.

That was the last thing I tried before the Nomacs install, which also didn't work.
I suspect the trouble might be related to having used Revo uninstaller to get rid of OneDrive.

I should add that Option #1 did add the Windows Photo Viewer to the right click menu. But it still doesn't work when I double click a picture.

If you have Windows Photo Viewer in the right click 'Open with' menu then its a simple step to make it the default. UCPD does not stop you changing defaults, it only stops 3rd party apps from doing so.

UCPD does not prevent users from manually making changes to their default apps settings. UCPD only affects third-party apps.

Right click, in 'Open with' click 'Choose another app'. Windows Photo Viewer will be in this list too. Select it then click the 'Always' button.
