Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't know why you can't use the jump lists? Simply pin Excel to the taskbar, open your Excel files and they'll be added to the jump list. Right click Excel and pick the file you want. You can also pin items in the jump lists by simply clicking the pin icon. After that, there no need to browse Explorer for the files as they'll be in the jump list.

Jump lists are extremely useful and works for all Office apps, including Outlook.

Yes, you cannot drag a file to the Excel icon on the Taskbar to pin it there, as you could in Windows 10. But there is another way you can pin the files you use. First make sure you have turned on 'Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists and File Explorer'.

View attachment 19938

Then every file you open in Excel will subsequently appear in its Jump List (aka 'Recent') . If you now right-click on the Excel icon you can pin anything from its jump List.

You will only have to do that once for each new file, after that it will be in the list of recent files and you can pin it from there.

Perfect answers. I don't know why this won't work for anyone.

Especially since it's a feature that's natively built in. Anyway, that's not the first time I posted that info. Nor the one about Icons in the Start Menu being able to be easily pinned to the taskbar

I guess it just depends on who says it that gets the credit.

Hi Guys,

Struggling to find solution for this, everyone keep saying right-click on the file and choose pin to taskbar but almost half of the files and apps don't have this option even under show more.

I upgraded to Windows 11 thinking my life would be easier but I work with a lot of Excel files and most of the files I add to the Excel App Icon on the task bar (I pin them there) so when I need them I could just right-click on the Excel app icon on taskbar and click the file I need. Now after windows 11 the option is gone, so I have to keep browsing using windows explorer to get to each files I need.

There must be a way to do this? Other new forums keep saying just right-click on the file and the pin to taskbar option should be there but it isn't. Some app and files have it some don't and most importantly Excel files I have don't have this.

I could probably create an Auto-It exe to act as a launcher from the task bar but do I really need to go through that?
This worked for me.
Go to Settings -> Personalisation -> Start -> Show recently opened items in Jump lists...

No way to pin a file to the app on the task bar :( I am aware that most people don't care and have al ot of short cut for files on the dashboard but this is a terrible solution if you are working with several documents thar will cover these shortcuts. When the shortcut is tied to the app on the taskbar it's always accessible. My shortcuts from Win 10 is still attached to the app! so maybe there is hope for a solution?Picture1.png

Pin Excel to the Taskbar. Turn on 'Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer'.

For every app you pin to the Taskbar a right-click shows a jump list of recently opened files. You can pin them from there. Here I have used Notepad as an example....

If there is just one file you need to open from Taskbar, you can add the file path to the end of the Excel Taskbar icon properties:
(I have merged some sheets into one Excel file and use this method to access all of them just by one Excel icon that is pinned on Taskbar)
