General Pin to Taskbar an App, Drive, File, Folder, or Site in Windows 11

  • Staff
Pin_to_Taskbar_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to pin an app, drive, file, folder, or site to the taskbar for your account in Windows 11.

The taskbar in Windows 11 shows the Start menu, Search, Task View, Widgets, Chat, File Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft Store buttons (icons) aligned to the center by default.

The taskbar will also show the icon of the app for any window you have open. If you like, you can pin an app to the taskbar to always show the app's icon on the taskbar whether the app is open or not. Pinning an app to the taskbar makes it easier to open the app on demand from the taskbar.

References:

Items you pin to the taskbar are stored and referenced in both locations below for your account.

In the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband

In a folder:
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

The folder 'User Pinned' has the default hidden attribute. Very uncomfortable.
Better to reset this attribute.

$TargetDirectory = "$env:APPDATA\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned"
(Get-Item $TargetDirectory -Force).Attributes -= 'Hidden'

Any way to pin the Show Desktop shortcut from the old quick launch toolbar (still exists in 11, C:\Users\AM\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch)?

The show desktop on the far right of taskbar is a tiny narrow sliver that is not as convenient to click on as a proper button.

Thanks! I had a shortcut on my desktop for QuickLaunch (which I had to finesse after upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10, skipping 8.1 entirely as it was a total POS). Now I don't have to minimize all windows to open that folder...but too bad I can't restore the old QuickLaunch function, where instead of opening the folder, a pop-up interface for its contents manifests.

I don't suppose anyone has a .reg key to disable pinning completely from the right-click context menu? like pin to taskbar/pin to start/pin to favourites - the windows 10 ones I used to use no longer work :(

Thanks in advance guys love the work you do.

I learned something kind of cool this evening on "Google Chrome" I can turn a bookmark into an app so to speak and then I can save it to desktop and place it into a folder and then change the "apps" icons and then save the apps to my taskbar and change the icons on the taskbar to work with my wallpaper theme.

here is how I did it:
(1) I went to my bookmarks on my "Google Chrome" and I edited the list of bookmarks
(2) I took all the bookmarks I visit daily and ones I use mostly but not daily and place them in a list of under 15 bookmarks
(3) I edited the name of the bookmark example:
elevenforum.com is now called "11" just 11 simple enough for me to use
(4) So I visit "11" and then I click the menu button on "Chrome" and then I click "Create Shortcut" after hoovering on "More Tools"
(5) Now it says "Create Shortcut?" I fill in the name of the "Shortcut" "11" and I check "Open as window". And then I hit the button "Create".
(6) Now I have the shortcut created and go to "File Explorer" I then go to "Desktop" and I create a new folder called "Favorite Apps" and then I slide "11" into the folder.
(7) I then move on to the other bookmarks to turn them into apps.
(8) Now I go back to the "Favorite Apps" folder and "Right Click" the first "App" called "11" and then I find "Properties" or you can hit "Alt+Enter". Now there is a bunch of information in here telling you the main location and such as well as shortcut key which is none and "Comment" which is keywords for the forum. Such as "Windows 11 forum, help, support, tutorials and guides and more.
(9) I now click on "Change Icon" and then I choose the icon in the popup window and then I double click the icon that just got changed to open the "App" as a window only and not a browser and then I see just the strip on the top and no search bar like with a browser I have a back button a refresh button and then 11 - Windows 11 Forum and then on the right side I see "Puzzle Icon" for extensions and the menu icon which is ... and then shrink expand close. very simple window.
(10) Now since I know how it looks when this "App - Shortcut" opens I want to change the "Icon" that shows up on the "taskbar" to do this I just "Right Click" then hover over the "11" and then "Right Click" again. And then "Left Click>Properties" and then I go to "Change Icon" and then I find the same icon again and select it. Now the icon in the folder for the "App - Shortcut" and the "App - Icon on the Taskbar" are the same icons. so now I have a nice looking taskbar starting up.

I also prefer the "Open as Window" so that this way the stuff from the "Original Setup - Google Chrome" dose not show up. Its just this one site and nothing else. Nice and clean and then when I'm done visiting the site I can just close the window as a whole.

Example of current theme:

Since the theme is "Japanese" with a "Japanese home near a pond or lake" some stuff would work for this and many other wallpapers.

Ronin Helmets, Japanese Flowers, Japanese Foods and Snacks

Shortcuts for cooking websites or recipes only could be a decorative table with foods on it
And then things like how to sites could be something like a dragon head for wisdom
and then just go based on the theme

Its really no different then a anime theme or a cat theme really you just need to find something that will work on your taskbar. And so far this seems to work for me pretty well.

And by opening it as a window there is no favicon on the top only the header image is there which I'm okay with. Plus the "window color is taken from the background and matches the taskbar color". so far everything looks pretty good. I just need to finish tinkering in the morning. I plan to have some sounds and some tinkering around with a auto hotkey to open the "folder" for "Favorite Apps" automatically with a autohotkey that will start being active at start up.

Example: hitting Ctrl+q will automatically open the folder and then I will have all of my "Apps" right there. I would have prefered placing them on the "Start" screen but then I have that "Recommend" area with the "Recommended" text showing. Its just to much of a mess. So having everything in a folder and pinned to the taskbar is easier.

Daily used sites will be on the "taskbar" and ones I use less often but that I use from the "Home Page" will be kept in the folder. So maybe place 10 or so on the taskbar and more in the folder.

So now since I know how to do this I plan to move all of my firefox bookmarks to the "Google Chrome" and tinker with them a bit to. If anyone else is doing some work on there icons on the taskbar by adding bookmarks or links and then editing them by "Name, or Icon" please let me know if you found a way you prefer to do this. I hope my long winded trick helps others.

@Brink, Hi there, mate!

I have an "app" shortcut for 11 Forum on my taskbar, quickly and easily made by coming to 11 Forum in Chrome, then meatball menu, More tools, Create Shortcut, Create, and Pin to Taskbar. Works. But it does "create an app," and add it to the installed Programs and Features list (and the Apps > Installed apps list, ofc), and what I'd like to do instead is simply create a desktop Internet shortcut to 11 Forum, give it the right icon (John, our Site Boss, directed me to a couple) and pin that to the taskbar, thus eliminating the need for the artificial "app" in my lists.

Can this be done without using a third-party app to change the properties of the 11 taskbar (Explorer Patcher, Start 11, etc.)?

Thank you, sir! That seems so obvious, now that you've told me how to do it. But before you told me how to do it, I couldn't figure it out. My excuse: I'm old, and old heads don't work as well as they once did. :(
