Hi all,

Is it possible to set Windows to ask before downloading and installing *just* feature updates (or just Insider ones)?

I like having access to Insider builds but their large size, use of resources and the length of time involved in installing them means it's not always convenient to immediately when they're available. I don't mind all other updates downloading/installing immediately though. Is it possible to change the setting for feature builds, but not other updates?

I've submitted a suggestion in the Feedback Hub here - Windows Insider Program

Thanks, Tom

The problem is a Features update may also contain security updates but not so much other way round. I doubt it is possible to do what you want - I cannot see this becoming an Insider feature. With normal Windows, feature updates are optional anyway.

Why don't you just defer them on an as needs basis, or install overnight?

Whenever a build comes out, you can read the blogs posted here (microseconds after release) and decide.

Not really. But you can set your network connection to be "Metered" , this will make Windows Update less annoying, as it will no longer download feature or driver updates automatically.
It will only auto-download critical security patches. For everything else, it will ask.

Remember this is a system-wide setting and will affect many other apps too. For example OneDrive sync will stop too, but it has an option to sync anyway.

For which channel are you asking? Quite different situation.
- Beta channel is pretty slow - you can have almost normal behavior - installing security updates etc for a month or even more. When feature update comes, you can wait for a few days or so. If you don't have an hour time in a week, maybe Insider is not for you
- Dev channel on the other hand is made out from wseparate updates. You get a completely new build almost weekly. Separate Security updates are almost non-existent

From my point of view - you are a Beta channel user, and use updates as it would normally come to RTM version
