Thank you all. VLC has worked for a few of the dvds but not the others which are all commercial, unused and new. Dont really understand why but at least some of them work and the others I will try on a proper computer rather than the external dvd . dont suppose the answer is to revert to windows 10 and windows media player rather than legacy and would this be posssible or advisable anyway?

Are the ones that don't play Blu-Ray? It's also possible the DVDs are bad.

We also have a Dell External DVD drive which we bought with our Dell laptop last year. The drive came with an OEM copy of Cyberlink Media Suite in the box. This includes PowerDVD. TBH we haven't used it as, like others, we use VLC. Dell may be able to point you to a download if no disc was included if you wanted to try it.

I have inserted cyber disc. Select what happens. If i chose first option to run or install it comes up with app blocked for my protection. Option 2 open folder in file explorer: cms or auto run or cyberlink. I dont know what im supposed to do..

You're trying to install the Cyberlink software from a CD or DVD?

I'm not sure why Windows is complaining about the installer. Did you receive Windows 11 in S mode? That won't allow you to install apps outside the Microsoft Store. (Did you get VLC Player from there? I see that it's offered in the MS store.)

If you're in S mode, you can switch out of it for free. Switching out of S mode in Windows - Microsoft Support

Once in regular Windows, you won't be able to revert to S mode.

Its a dvd. Ive no idea if its s mode, but every time i put in another dvd , microsoft store pops up so maybe it is?
I cant remember where i got vlc from...how can i check?
This is all going over my head. I cant believe so many of my dvds wont work and why they are different to the ones that do work.
I just wanted to be able to shove in a dvd and watch it without the bruhaha!

I don’t use VLC, maybe someone knows how to teach Sally how to associate all media files with VLC? It would seem that simple, maybe?
VLC plays Blu-ray, maybe it’s an association thing.

The best and easiest way to set VLC Media Player file associations is during the installation of VLC. The installation process ask you whether you would like to associate the different media file types with VLC or not. By default, all the file types are checked and it allows you to uncheck any if you want to.

After the fact of installing VLC Media Player, it's a little more difficult.
settings>apps>default apps>find VLC Media Player in the list and click the arrow to the far right beside it.
All the file types that VLC can open will appear.
For each file type that you want to open in VLC,click the funny looking little square icon to the right of the file type. Select VLC Media Player from the list.

You would also want to change your autoplay setttings so your DVDc/CDs will play automatically when inserted into the dvd drive.
Go to Control Panel>Autoplay CLick the little down arrow to make your choice.
