Problem with "Extract All" when downloaded files are in multiple parts

I have downloaded a file in multiple parts such as this:
xx.part1.rar
xx.part2.rar
When I run "Extract All" I get this message:
1699053541701.png

Obviously, it needs to be able to handle multi-part downloaded files.
FYI: I can extract the content using 7-Zip, I don't use WinRar due to it's security vulnerabilities.

Windows 11 has only just got support for extracting archive formats other than a .zip file. Windows has supported the zip format since at least Windows 7.

The support is fairly basic, and does not support multi-part archives of any format, not even .zip. In addition, you cannot set a password for any archive you make, and can only extract a password protected archive that's a zip archive. Explorer only supports extracting simple archives, you'll need to keep using 7-Zip for anything more complex. It is unlikely MS will add any new functions, after all, they haven't done so for zip files in all the years they have supported them.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Usually the need for 2 or more parts of a compressed file is due to it being too large for a single file. WinRar probably will be needed to put the parts together then extract the files.

Both WinRar and 7-Zip support making or extracting muti-part archive files. They are less common these days, but were widely used back when archives had to fit on multiple floppy disks. They are less common now, but can be still found when downloading older software, archived when the practice was more common.

Windows File Explorer does not support extracting multi-part archives, and it's unlikely it ever will. For that WinRar of 7-Zip will be required.

7-Zip just did some multi part RAR files for me this morning. It does work, and it's free. The files came out perfectly.
