Question about Windows 11 Home to Pro Upgrade

Windows 11 Pro
Running a laptop with 11 Home installed, version 25H2 26200.7462. Purchased a retail key for Pro. Question, the machine has a local account. When I do the upgrade and enter the retail key, will Pro attempt to push the MS Account on me or recognize the local acct. and just continue? Also, will Pro attempt to encrypt drive with BitLocker? Just want to be prepared to do the "adjustments" to stop both of those. Any procedures you think I should follow would be appreciated. Thanks everyone for the info.

This may or may not answer your question but when I upgraded my Windows 10 Pro w/local account and no BitLocker to Windows 11 Pro it did not force me to use my MS account nor did it enable BitLocker. I think those things (might) happen if you do a fresh install of Windows 11 Pro. So, under Windows 11 Pro I continue to use my local account and BitLocker is not enabled.

Call me out if I'm misstating anything.

You are not mistaken. The requirement for an MS account and automatic drive encryption only happen with a clean install.

Upgrading from Home to Pro will keep your current account and settings.

Both Home and Pro can (strongly) suggest you use an MS account though, unless you turn off these three settings.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

1) Recheck local / Microsoft / hybrid account status:

2) Recheck bitlocker status:

I just did this very thing a week ago . . . MS did not force anything but I had to jump through some hoops to get it registered/activated on their activation web page and enter in the product numbers (lot's of numbers) but nothing to complain about as far as MS pushing apps on me. Maybe a few things showed up that I had previously deleted but I right mouse click and DELETE worked. Go into Control Panel and look around.

I have been looking at them for a while but was a little nervous about the price. Gunrunnerjohn, when you upgraded, did you just enter the key in Windows 11 Home and then upgrade or did you install Pro first, activate with the generic key and then enter your new Pro key? Thanks for the info.

I dont know if it matters but I put the key in first and then activated after it updated to Pro but I would probably reverse the order if I did it again just to see if anything is different. I got a message that the key was already used the way I did it but I was able to activate with that same key anyway. Maybe changing keys first is what caused it(?)

I just went to "Change product key" and the upgrade process was invoked. It went seamlessly from there. I do recommend an image backup, just in case.

That's what I did but after the update to Pro it made me re-activate. I had to jump through hoops to activate the key because it said it was already used but I got through it just fine.

    The only thing it lack is USB-3.2 on the front face but it has 3.0 on the back
I had no issue with two of the Stack Social keys, I used them, activated them, and all was well.

If you open a command prompt and run slmgr /dlv, you should get a display like this. You want the RETAIL channel version.

That’s the way it is normally done. Just type in the product key and go online. Windows 11 Pro will automatically be activated.

Look at the window. You can actually see it happening.

    Too many laptops with different system specifications.
There are two types of Win 10 Pro license, Retail and OEM
- If you have a Retail license, all you have to do is to change the key on the System > Activation > Change license with the Retail license.
It will upgrade to pro and after a reboot it will activate.
- If you have a OEM license, disconnect from the internet, and change the key on the System > Activation > Change license with a generic Pro license (VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T).
It will upgrade to pro but WON'T activate. You have to change the key on the System > Activation > Change license with the OEM license.
After a reboot, connect to the internet and it will activate

Just to add, you have to disconnect from the internet to be able to upgrade Home to Pro with the generic key. If you are on-line it will check the key and say that a generic key is not valid. While off-line it cannot check the key, and will proceed with the upgrade.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

My Laptop had an OEM Win11 Home license, and I used a Retail Win11 Pro Key to upgrade it. The upgrade was pretty much totally automatic, I just told it to change the key and it went about updating and rebooting. Presto, I was running Win11 Pro. Win10 wasn't in the picture, so I'm not sure if that would have changed the picture.
