Hi, I'm using Windows 11 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4391) but the problem happened before the last update too. The PC components were bought and assembled about a year ago.

As it's infrequent, I don't know when exactly but at least 6 months ago. It occurs when the system is idle or doing common tasks (not while gaming, but when watching a youtube stream) once every few days. This can happen when using the PC, or when left alone (before going into sleep mode). Note there is no BSOD, the screen just freezes instead (or if the monitor was off, it doesn't come back).

The output from dm log collector v2 is attached. I tried the usual CHKDSK, SFC, and DISM advice, re-seated GPU and RAM chips, updated Windows, etc. I've ran OCCT in mixed mode for an hour and it didn't detect issues. Checked Event Viewer and the only critical events are the "Event 41, Kernel-Power" but there are error events to check.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I am not at my desktop right now, but I can note a few things looking at your systems specs and the logs.

1. I have only experienced crashes like you describe from memory issues. The computer will just wink out because it cannot do anything without memory

2. You list in your system spec that your memory is g.skill flare. Is that correct? g.skill flare is made for AMD processors, not Intel, so it may or may not work or work correctly in an Intel system. This could be your issue. g.skill and Asus do not certify it for your Asus motherboard.

3. The logs indicate a number of Fatal WHEA errors. These are hardware errors that crash your system. So you have some hardware issues, my guess memory, that is causing your system to crash.

4. Crashes at idle can indicate that the processor cores are not getting enough voltage near idle. This can happen for a number of reasons, One possibility is how the motherboard (or you) has tuned your CPU. Are you using auto settings, Intel defaults? Have you done any undervolting?

5. Do update your BIOS as indicated in the post above. It will be a bit different if you have tuned the BIOS yourself.

Will check in sometime tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies. I've performed the steps mentioned by zbook, and attached Tuneup.log. Will post again if/when the crash happens.

PerpetualCycle, I didn't know about the RAM chips (this is the product). This is the first time I switched from AMD to Intel, and I probably missed it. I did notice than when using dual channel configuration the system didn't boot (and motherboard diagnosic lights flashed indicating memory errors), or when using other slot configurations. Should this issue show up if I run memtest86 or a similar tool?

i found this in relation to 'Event 41 kernel power'
you seem to have done most of them but it maybe worth while disabling 'fast startup'
then shutting the system down and rebooting.

best of luck, Steve ..

Kernel power error just means the system shut down unexpectedly. The errors that could tell why are the fatal WHEA errors 8n the system log. If we could decode those we would know what hardware was responsible. Pci-e, memory, cpu etc. But the data in the logs is very opaque and difficult to decide.

Memtest86 is not a very good memory checker especially in cases like this. Let me think of better one that will catch errors that memtest86 does not see. There are several but some are difficult to setup. You would have to run them for hours to catch a potential memory error that is infrequent as yours.

Edit: i know this about memtest86 because I fine tune memory timings and overclock memory for kicks.

Thanks.
Mine was doing this for a while, until I figured out one of my extra HDDs were faulty. Once I replaced it, no more crashes/freezes. If you have any extra HDDs in your computer, might try unplugging one by one.

Kernel power error just means the system shut down unexpectedly. The errors that could tell why are the fatal WHEA errors 8n the system log. If we could decode those we would know what hardware was responsible. Pci-e, memory, cpu etc. But the data in the logs is very opaque and difficult to decide.
I've used DecodeWheaRecord to decode the opaque information and attached the logs (the errors appear to be the same, they are from 3 different events). I'm still note sure what device or software it's from.

It looks like those WHEA firmware errors are microprocessor microcode errors. Have you updated to the BIOS firmware 3802 as suggested. That would update the microcode and probably fix these WHEA errors, maybe the freezing too.
