They do if they keep getting resold. Don’t ask me how they distinguish if a key has been used or not, to be able to attempt to resell them. My guess is that many vendors know they are reselling keys that others have or have already used.

This is the same for nearly every cheap Microsoft key across the web.
Then there are “Scrap Keys” that are also sold across the web. But that’s another story.

A "Windows scrap key" refers to a Windows product key that is being sold or distributed illegally, often obtained through unauthorized methods like stolen licenses or volume keys being used beyond their intended scope. These keys are not legitimately sold by Microsoft and may not be valid for long, as Microsoft may revoke them if they detect widespread use.

How does one check to see if you have a "retail" key? I see people saying that they "checked", but the Microsoft key checker doesn't make that distinction.

Indeed. And gHacks runs a special on occasion, which is where I bought mine which was a pretty good deal. BTW, many super-discounted offers from 3rd parties are often illegal but may work.

ShowKeyPlus does show if your key is a retail key or not. I'm on my cell phone so I'm going by memory. Click on check key and type in the key you want checked.

I also bought a key from Stack about the same time. Worked to activate a Hyper-V VM, no issues.
