Windows 11 Pro 24H2
Hey guys!
I need some suggestions for reducing the amount of background activities of system components and services in Win11 24H2.
Right now, it's using 2GB of RAM and 110 processes are running in the background in idle mode. no apps are installed yet.

Deactivated parts:
- XBOX
- AI Features like Copilot and Recall
- Windows Search
- Windows Defender
- Telemetry
- MS Account
- OneDrive
- Prefetch (SysMain)

Background activity will appear when Windows starts some task by some trigger.
Task Scheduler > Task Scheduler Library > Windows
It doesn't really correlate with the amount of RAM used.

I don't want to make that kind of recommendation, I think it's clear why. You should set it up yourself.

it's not clear for me. why not? it's only for me and I will check all your recommendations, then I'm going to use some of them based on my own usage. I can't understand some of the scheduled tasks so I'm asking here to find those tasks which aren't necessary.

1. Easy to find on the Internet.
2. Maybe it's not super important.
For example, if you enable Game Mode, the background activity of the services will be suspended when the game is running.

alright thank you.
those are old tutorials and threads, that's why I asked again because Windows is always changing and I don't want to destroy it :)
Just working on this script to publish another update.

after disabling these services windows update shows 0x80004002 error and Store is not downloading apps. which disabled services are necessary for windows update?
set all of them as "auto" and problem solved. so other image modifications are not the reason but the services.

Don't disable services unless you know what you're doing.

The safe approach to curb RAM is to turn off all running apps.

Launch them manually. There should be no reason for apps to continue running in the background hogging RAM and slowing down your PC.

I just disable all startup applications. Most of them are updaters or just preload the application to make it open faster. I would rather wait a few seconds for the application to open than preload it and unnecessarily consume resources. Same goes for non-Microsoft services like Google Update or Firefox Maintenance. I can update them manually any time. Also disable visual effects such as fades, animations and transparency to make the computer even faster.

thank you spapakons, I do the same and create a rule for each app to run its services before running (some of them won't run their services automatically).
My goal is to optimize "Windows" services. some services are really unnecessary for a daily usage!

Agree, but if you just disable Windows services without knowing what you are doing can break things. And the worst of all is not that simple to just enable the services and fix the issue, unless of course you remember which ones you disabled. There are many guides for gamers on the internet what to disable to improve performance during gaming, however it's better to wait for another member to post a reply because they don't apply to all Windows versions and at all circumstances.

PS: What are the specs of the computer you are trying to do that? If it is rather modern with at least 4GB RAM, you won't notice much improvement.

I agree with you, disabling services is based on usage and we cannot give a list for all users.

I want to use this list for a laptop for web browsing and office stuff. windows update is important for me.
I don't play games on this pc, and i don't use remote desktop, Xbox services, AI features and cloud features on this low-budget laptop.
haven't test it yet but I'm going to test it first on a VM today to make sure everything's working fine for my specific usage.

Install Windows 11 on a virtual machine and then start disabling services one-by-one, after examining carefully what they do. See if you have any issues. If not, disable a couple more. Repeat until you have disabled most of these you don't use. In case you get into any issues enable the last ones and see it they issues are gone. If they are, post which one they were, so others know what to avoid.

OOPS Sorry I want to modify them :winkt:
Then don't be shocked if you get issues. I don't disable any service on mine and I don't run into issues.

Normally when you install a third-party antivirus, it disables Windows Defender, as running two antiviruses at the same time one checks the other and they drain all system resources. Hopefully this is not the case, but I wanted to mention it. In earlier Windows versions, such as XP, Vista and 7 there was no warning when you tried to install a second antivirus, so I have seen many cases that a user had created a "super secure" but also "super slow" system! The same goes for third-party firewalls and antimalware. In Greek we say "when many roosters shout at the same time, the day starts late".

Alright I installed windows on a vm and tested all services which I know are not necessary.
here is a final list for me (defender deactivated at all)
all default disabled services in official windows image are still disable in my list.
Changed disabled services in previous list to demand so when windows or apps need them, they are available. also they won't run at startup, so more ram is available. tested on windows 11 and 10. everything's working fine now.

Everyone who runs Windows has different feature or app requirements. Someone might never use a Windows feature, so they don't notice if specific services are disabled. Same thing for apps.

The only universal rule for debloating is "don't get greedy". You're at the stage where you're rapidly discovering online lists of tweaks, faster than your ability to safely test them. You get greedy and try to implement too many changes at one time. Then end up on a forum looking for help.

The correct approach is to take your lists, and divide them into controlled batches. Run with the changes for a while (a few days) and see if you notice any bad effects. If everything worked out, move to the next batch. Repeat this process at a controlled rate.

Where you will encounter negative feedback from other community members is presenting a long list of tweaks, and asking "help me".

Fix it yourself. Broken tweaks aren't really a technical problem, it's a process problem made by humans. You're not the first person to tweak, and you won't be the last. But the sound advice is the same for everyone.

Well, here's the thing the reason Windows 10/11 keeps lots of items in memory is that when items are needed, access is almost instantaneous - idling with 2 GB RAM is quite normal. In the end, put more RAM (8 GB minimum but 16 GB better).

The days when you had to tweak lots of services to get significantly better performance is a thing of the past with modern CPUs and RAM.

The only services I disable are from 3rd party apps. Just let Windows do its job.
