Reformating a HD

Don't know if a Hard Drive is considered a "device," but this forum is the closest I could find. Have an internal HD (the case failed). I've connected the HD to a W11 PC via USB. It isn't recognized in File Explorer nor Disk Management. How do I access/reformat the drive?

If it doesn't show in Disk Management the the drive is not being seen by the system. This may be because the drive is dead. There is another possibility though.

A USB port provides sufficient power to run a 2.5" HDD, but a 3.5" internal HDD requires more power than a single USB port can supply. To use a 3.5" drive through a usb connection you need a usb adapter that has its own external power supply, For examples see this search:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Also, most External drives can be used on a PC, a Mac and a Linux computer. The drive case has an interface that interprets what is needed as to the formatting. I've had a couple cases fail and lost all the data on the drive because nothing else I had could access the files. Even a NAS drive has an interface, took one out of service but not until I'd copied everything to another drive, then I was able to use it in a drive dock and delete all the partitions and create a single partition and format for further use, now a second or data drive in my Desktop..

Yes as mentioned a 2.5inch "Laptop based" which only needs USB Power and 3.5 "Desktop based" needs a external power adapter or... Two USB cables (Y-Cable) LINK or 3.5inch encloser LINK

The main difference to consider is the 2.5" drives usually need only 5VDC while the 3.5" need both 5VDC and 12VDC.

A number of you were correct - I needed a power source. I was given the cable to connect the HD to USB, but wasn't given the power cord. Got that, plugged it in, and it worked. Thanks very much.
One followup. I'm giving two HDs to charity. Will formating permanently erase data and make it unretreivable?

No. Not a quick format anyway. A full format might - it writes zeros to the whole drive. I use parted magic for erasing drives. You have the option to do "secure erase" with that. If the drive is a smart drive then it will be able to do a secure erase which is quicker. If not then Parted Magic has various options - fill the drive with zeros - fill the drive with random data - or do more than one pass with zeros. It also has the option to erase the mbr separately. I always do that first just to be sure, then reformat the drive, then erase by one method or the other.

A full format does the same thing - fills the drive with zeros - but only that one option and I don't know if it wipes the mbr.

I use GPARTED [GNU Partition Editor] and it appears to wipe everything back to as-shipped condition.
