Accounts Remove Facial Recognition Sign-in from Account in Windows 11

  • Staff
Facial_recognition_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to remove the Windows Hello facial recognition sign-in option from your account in Windows 11.

Windows Hello is a more personal, more secure way to get instant access to your Windows 11 devices using a PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint. You'll need to set up a PIN as part of setting up fingerprint or facial recognition sign-in, but you can also sign in with just your PIN.

These options help make it easier and safer to sign into your PC because your PIN is only associated with one device and it's backed up for recovery with your Microsoft account.

You can set up facial recognition sign-in with your PC's infrared camera or an external infrared camera.

Here's How:

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Accounts on the left side, and click/tap on Sign-in options on the right side. (see screenshot below)

3 Under Ways to sign in, click/tap on Facial recognition (Windows Hello) to expand it open. (see screenshot below step 4)

4 Click/tap on the Remove button to the right of Remove this sign-in option. (see screenshot below)

5 You can now close Settings if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Hi Brink. A quick question. I use a fingerprint to login to windows. Windows Hello Face is listed as an optional feature for me. I do have a camera but do not wish to use it. Windows hello facial recognition says that it is not currently available because I have my camera off and it stays off. Can I remove the hello face part without losing my fingerprint part of windows hello? Hope I have been clear.:)

I thought it was either or, must be an option to use your biometric of choice. Never had one that uses those methods but it would seem bizarre to force you to use both or none at all

Makes sense to me, but I don't want to remove it until I know for sure it won't remove fingerprint hello too. I also have pin set up in case something should happen to fingerprint. It is not actually hurting anything to leave it alone, but I like a tidy computer.

Hello Connie, :)

I'm afraid I haven't seen a way to remove Sign-in options from the Settings page. Only to disable them, but they still show as currently unavailable.

Thanks Brink. It is strange but windows hello face is in my optional features in settings for removal. Just apprehensive about doing that. I think letting it be is the best idea. I sure don't want to lose the other sign in options.

I just tested uninstalling "Facial Recognition (Windows Hello)" in optional features to see, but it didn't remove Face from the sign-in options page in Settings. :(

I didn't have "Windows Hello Face" listed in optional features though, unless it's just a difference since I have an Insider Dev build installed.

Hmm. Well like I said it isn't hurting anything leaving it. Thanks for testing this. :) Maybe it will be actually implemented in the future where we can pick which or all features to sign in with. Much appreciated Brink.

Perhaps it is listed in mine as I have my camera disabled on my laptop and have never used the hello face part. I will just leave it be. Thanks so much for looking and testing though. Have a good day!!
