Replacement for Word and LibreOffice

Can someone recommend a good replacement for Word and LibreOffice? With Word you have to get a yearly subscription, pay a lot of money to buy it outright, or allow Microsoft to store your data (and have access to it). I don’t like the format or quirks of LibreOffice. And to remove it completely I had to reinstall Windows.

All software does things to the registry.
That's why most of us use REVO Uninstaller (with it's "scan" for leftovers function), to uninstall software.

Another option when trying out software is to make a fresh backup first.
Then if you want to "completely" remove it... just restore from a backup. :-)
Unfortunately all my backups had office installed as well. It was an odd one - revo didn't work either. Microsoft couldn't even get it removed. Or it was removed but still converted Office 2024 into Professional Plus 2021 - hence it needed a clean install. Which then burned out the computer, so had to clean install on another computer. Hence I wished I had never purchased Office Pro Plus 2021 for £30 - time and money and hassle in the end. I had a thread on it. I think if you replace it with another pro plus version it's ok, but if you try and replace it with Office from Microsoft - no go.

Whoa... I don't speak Office at all.
I just know one or two things about programs in general.

Many programs, do make entries in the registry that do cause removal problems.
That's where REVO comes into play.
Sometimes you need to reinstall a program and then use REVO to remove it, making sure you do the "scan" for leftovers.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
It's £119 to buy it outright, which is supported till 2029 I think . So from now would work out approx £30 a year (or £2.50 a month equivalent) - which I don't think is too bad. Other than that I have only used Libre office, and Abiword. If you just want a word replacement, and not full office, you could try abiword. There's also a portable version. OR you could just use Wordpad :-) It's possible to install it on Windows 11. Personally I'd rather buy the real Word outright.

I can't see what the difficulty was with uninstalling libre office either it should just uninstall normally and no need to reinstall Windows. However I did have to reinstall Windows to completely uninstall a "cheap" copy of MS Office Professional Pro Plus 2021 - which was a total pain and why I next bought the full price version of Ms Office Home from the Microsoft store.
I used Revo Uninstaller. After it used the uninstaller program that came with Libre Office, Revo found more entries the uninstaller missed. Then I found others that Revo had missed. And I just use my pc to learn about pc computers (my main computer is my Mac laptop), I didn’t have any problem reloading Windows.

you can buy MS Office 2019 for less than $20 (less$ with sales on), just go a cheap office key website, I got a couple copies myself, for my computers. Libre office was good, but is much better to have the real thing. There are several threads about this.
Maybe it’s because I live in Australia. But I just looked and it would cost me $219 (Aus) to buy MS Office 2019.

I looked at the like for Professional 2021 and it’s $34.97 for PC and $49.97 for Mac. That’s an amazing offer. But I’ve been taught to view offers that are too good to be true as having hidden traps. Have you purchased this software from StackSocial?

Stack Social has it WAY cheaper than that for Office 2019 ($219.00), especially add 15% discount for first time users

I have used software bought from StackSocial on recommendations from this site, and have never had an issue.

Thanks Jaree. I had gone to JB Hifi’s page. Microsoft Office Home 2024 [Digital Download]

But the more I read about Stack Social, the more I like it. I looked at Trust Pilot and they say that overwhelmingly customers have an positive experience with them.

I've been buying $30 StackSocial keys for years..., nuthin wrong with them!

If it's a supported version, it'll install.
If the purchase key has been verified by Microsoft, they could care less which version you use!

I've been using Home and Student 2021 and it installs directly on to your machine. It's not 365 cloud-based.

As long as you register your keys with them, they don't give a sh*t what version you use!

I’m very confused. I just purchased Microsoft Office Home & Business for Mac 2021: Lifetime License from Stack Social.

Problems:
1) When the suite was downloading, the message said it was downloading Microsoft Office 365. And yet, when I look at the installed apps, I don’t anything that says Office 365
2) I forgot that I have a folder from work that has Microsoft apps (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive for my work department, another icon that says OneDrive, and Microsoft Edge.

Yeah, I think I screwed-up. I’ll have to uninstall all of the Microsoft apps (work and personal), reinstall just the apps for work, and then talk with Stack Social to see how to handle the software I purchased from them. Ugh. This is fun. Not.

I think if you replace it with another pro plus version it's ok, but if you try and replace it with Office from Microsoft
You should never "replace" any version of MS Office with any other version. It should be a complete uninstall (Revo, Major Geeks) and a new install of the other version

revo didn't work either
Then there was something else at play, whether incorrect use or system errors ...

Or it was removed but still converted Office 2024 into Professional Plus 2021
??? That screams linking to some already signed-in MS account (i.e. elsewhere on the device) ... if, in fact, it did happen at all, that way ... ??? I could also suspect the possibility when you buy a cheap license from a nefarious source you may not get the edition/version you wanted. Many installed MS Office programs are generic and the version that becomes activated is dependent on the license key

hence it needed a clean install. Which then burned out the computer, so had to clean install on another computer.
Gets better and better ... all MS Office's fault, of course .... :eek1:

No not Microsoft's fault - I think it was a dodgy version of Office Pro Plus 2021. Once I had a clean install, Office 2024 installed fine. I was not the only person with the same issue with Office Pro Plus 2021.

It was further down this thread

No you can't "Save" your files in Word/Excel/etc format, the gdoc/gsheet/etc file has to be exported to the MS Office format. Then the file has to be moved from the Download folder to an appropriate location in the user's folder system. Do-able, but a PITA
It's actually very easy. You can choose the folder in which it is saved. You can even work offline.

I’ve removed all of the Microsoft apps, personal and for work. I have the Microsoft apps for work still on my iPhone, so that’s good. But I don’t understand why the apps from Stack Social say Office 365.

I find it amusing when people want a free copy of software to subsitute for a well proven version that costs money due to extensive development costs but has the same features/quailty.

My dear old Gran used to say "you get what you pay for".

One can only realistically suggest suitable free versions if OP clarifies what features are essential and which are nice to haves.

If you have a look at that thread I linked above, this seems to be normal now - it confused me as well. It's just terminology calling it office 365 when it's Office home - just ignore it, if it's just installing office.

Agree with this. I had issues. The software worked ok but didn't act as it should at removal time.

I tried to convey about the keys cheap and they give you the link and help to download the Office software. It doesn't matter where you live. You bought the wrong Office. There are many other websites with the same deals (and many different Office versions), doesn't have to be just from them.
