I am thinking of replacing my 3.5'' HDD for a 1 TB SSD...what precautions should i take before undertaking this?..i read in elevenforums somewhere that you can use a OS migration software like Disc Genius...what does ' migration ' actually mean ?...is this same as cloning a disc ?

I have another pc which has SSD and this loads up faster.

I can use the HDD as internal storage then.

Thank you

Windows Build/Version
Windows 11 Pro 22H2 version 22621.755 on Asus K31ADE

I would just use backup software. Make a backup of your Windows install on the 3.5" HDD and then restore it to the SSD.

A program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper will do that.

+1 for Macrium. Clone the HDD to the SSD or even better once Macrium is installed create their boot media on USB then image the HDD to an external drive, swap the HDD to the SSD then boot the pc via the USB media & restore the image to the SSD.

Yes.

Migrating an operating system is a similar idea to cloning. The migration program will offer to copy or "clone" the partitions needed by the operating system to the new disk.

There is usually an option to copy any other partitions from the source disk as well.

There are some adjustments made after the os partitions have been copied across to ensure the os boots correctly on the target disk.

I suggest diskgenius ( free version) for this task because it is very good at this job

Managed to install SSD in Dell Inspiron 3670 by removing HDD and used Acronis Clone Disc.
Booted up pc...loads faster.
However i wanted to keep HDD in pc but one end of power lead to motherboard is a small molex connector and not a serial type as was
supplied in kit i ordered from Amazon hence i had to remove HDD ...i'll have to find a correct SSD Power Lead from Amazon and re-install HDD
and use it as internal storage drive.

Other than that no real issues...now i know what cloning disc is all about...first time i done it.

Hi there

To @Fourthcar and any others who have spare HDD's (3.5 inch ones). Dont throw them away if they can be used for things like backups / multi-media etc.

For 3.5 inch "OLD-SKULE !! HDD's" get a powered SATA-USB adapter and then the 3.5 inch HDD runs perfectly. I have a 20 TB Enterprise NAS 3.5 HDD (got from work as they were moving / upgrading their servers) which I use entirely for off line backup --perfect -- works even on a laptop.

For 3.5 inch HDD's an "Unpowered " SATA-USB adapter won't have sufficient "juice" to drive the HDD.

Something like this -- various models on Amazon / google etc prices from around 12 EUR/USD.
